About:
Tiruvarur district of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. It is located in the southern tip of the Cauvery delta next to the Bay of Bengal. The Korayar River flows in the east of Muthupet and the Bamaniyar River flows in the west. The two rivers join near Muthupet and form a lagoon, which contains a variety of fish. Located about 400 km. from Chennai, Thirutturaipoondi and Vedaranyam are situated in the vicinity. The nearest railway station is the Muthupet Railway Station on the Karaikkudi – Tiruturaipundi line. Regular bus services also connects the town with the cities of Thanjavur, Mannargudi and Tiruvarur.Tiruvarur is one of the ancient heritage sites of India and is a representation of the religio-socio-cultural history of the Tamil region for a period spanning over a millennium and a half. In this temple there is an excellent and unique musical instrument called “Panchamuga Vadyam” with five faces. Each face is ornamented; one with a snake, another with lotus and another one is plain without decorations. One has a Swastik sign. Over each face leather is spread and over the central one Deerskin is spread. It is said that Nanchi Devi played on this instrument when Lord Shiva danced.The current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.Karunanidhi, was born in the village of Thirukuvalai, near Tiruvarur, and spent his childhood here.Tiruvarur is located to the east of Tamil Nadu, roughly halfway between the northern and southern borders. It has an average elevation of 3 metres (9 ft). Tiruvarur is situated at a distance of 24 km from Nagapattinam, 29 km from Nagore, 40 km from Karaikal, 40 km from Mayiladuthurai, 40 km from Kumbakonam, 56 km from Thanjavur, 27 km from Mannargudi and 28 km from Thiruthuraipoondi.
The lagoon in Muthupet makes it an ideal place for fishing, pearl hunting and bird hunting. It is well known for its fin fishes, shrimps and crabs. Muthupet is embellished with many mosques, which includes, Jumma (Kuthba) Mosque, New Mosque, Azath Nagar Mohideen Mosque, Darga Shariff Mosque, Makkah Mosque, Madhina Mosque, Arab Sahib Mosque, Kuttiyar Mosque, Mohideen Mosque, Pettai Mohideen Mosque, Jamia Mosque and Noor Mosque.

History of Tiruvarur Districts:
The District of Tiruvarur was carved out as a separate district by detaching Valangaiman Taluk from Thanjavur District and Thiruvarur, Nannilam, Kudavasal, Needamangalam, Mannargudi , Thirutturaippundi Taluks from Nagappatinam District on 01.01.1997. There are 2 Revenue Divisions, 7 Taluks, 10 Community Development Blocks, 3 Municipalties and 7 Town Panchayats in Thiruvarur District. Thiru M. R. Mohan IAS was the first District Collector of Thiruvarur District.Thanjavur attained prominence under the Chola rulers who were paramount in South India during the 9th to 12th centuries. They were excellent rulers and mighty builders. Many examples are found in the district which bears testimony to this. Many of these temples reflect the geniusness and architectural proficiency in sculpture, painting and wood-carving.The administration of Thanjavur (Tiruvarur) was given over to English fully under the Treaty of 1799. The ruler of Thanjavur was allowed to retain the fort of Thanjavur with very limited powers. When the ruler died in 1841, without heir, the Thanjavur fort was also annexed by the British. Thanjavur remained under the British rule until 1947 when India attained freedom.

Saraswati Temple in Thiruvarur is located in the small village Kuthanur on the banks of the river Arasilar, a tributary of the River Kaveri in the district of Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the few temples in India dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning and consort of Lord Brahma.Folk tales point to the Ottakuttar, a famous Tamil poet who carried out penance to this deity for the existence of this temple during 12th century AD.
