Namakkal District is surrounded by Salem District in the north and north-east, Erode District in the west, Karur District in the south and south-east and Perambalur District in the east. With an area of 3,363 sq km, Namakkal District has a population of over 1.4 million.The Namakkal district are marvels of brilliant architecture in South India. Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu is nearby Kolli hills and forms part of the Eastern Ghats. Kolli Hills is the most attractive destination in Namakkal district and the Cauvery River flows across the Namakkal district. Namakkal is also called as “Namagiri”, meaning the rock formation at the center of the town. Namakkal is well known for its temples and other sacred sites.The main crops are paddy, jowar, tapioca, sugarcane, groundnut and cotton. Horticultural crops like pineapples, mangoes and citrus fruits, and vegetable crops like onions, tomato and brinjal are also widely cultivated. Around 13,406 hectare of land is being irrigated using the government canals. Namakkal District is rich in natural resources such as bauxite, quartz, limestone and granite. Textile industry, transport industry, poultry units and sago and starch industry are the major industries.The district is extensively covered with hilly ranges and rocks with undulatory plains. The Kollimalairange with peaks 1219 metres runs along the east of Nammakkal and Rasipuram taluks. The parent district Salem has fairly extensive forest area of considerable value. The main products from the forest are sandalwood, bamboo, timber/ (silver oak and similar varieties) and firewood. The main source of revenue from the forests is from the Sandalwood trees which occur naturally in abundance in the plateau and hilly ranges.The temples of the Namakkal district are famous because of Sri Namagiri Thayar`s mercy, the greatness of Lakshmi Narasimha`s cave temple and the greatness of Lord Hanuman. There are many popular temples in the Namakkal district, mainly located around the Rockford. The temples of the Namakkal district are well connected in all major cities by roadways. Ardhanaareeswarar Temple is located at Kongunadu and is built at about 1,900 ft above sea level on top of a hillock called Naagagiri (Naaga – snake; giri-mountain), which has two enjoined peaks.Namakkal district is noted for Truck and Lorry external body building which dates back to 1956. Throughout India Namakkal is known for its Body Building industry for Trucks, Trailers, Tankers and Rig Unit. Finished trucks and Rig Units are even exported to foreign countries from Namakkal. Nearly 25000 people are employmed either directly and indirectly in truck body building activity and about 300 units in Namakkal and 100 Units in Tiruchengode are engaged in this activity
The temple can be reached by climbing about 1,220 steps on which are carved serpent forms. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and an idol of Bringi Rishi at the foot of deity Ardhanariswara is also seen. The Rajagopuram of this temple has five levels and five kalasams. The main Prakaram can be reached again after climbing down 20 steps from the entrance. The annual festival of this temple is celebrated in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (mid May – mid June), attracting thousands of devotees from far and near.

History of Namakkal Districts:
The struggle between the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, the Hoysalas rose to power and had control till the 14th century followed by Vijayanagar kings till 1565 AD. Then the Madurai Nayakas came to power in 1623 AD. Two of the Poligans of Tirumalai Nayak namely.Ramachandra Nayaka and Gatti Mudaliars ruled the Salem area. The Namakkal fort is reported to have been built by Ramchandra Nayaka. After about 1635 AD, the area came successively under the rule of Muslim Sultans of Bijapur and Golkonda, Mysore kings and then the Marattas, when about the year 1750 AD Hyder Ali came to power. During this period, it was a history of power struggle between Hyder Ali and later Tippu Sultan

Kapilarmalai Subramanya Temple:
Kapilarmalai Subramanya Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. This small cave temple of Namakkal district is situated on a hill named after saint Kapilar who is believed to have meditated here. The place of meditation is marked and respected. Kollimalai Arappaleeswarar Temple is one of the major temples of the Namakkal district and dates back to the period of Appar. The temple is also associated with Matsya Muni and a three-day annual festival celebrated in the month of aadi that attracts several devotees.Subramanya Temple:
Subramanya Temple is a hillock temple of Namakkal district situated at Alavaipatti near Rasipuram. The temple can be reached from the foot of the hill by climbing up 1500 steps. The foremost deity of the temple is Lord Muruga. The main festivals of this temple are Thaipusam, Skanda Shashti, Panguni Uttiram and Kartikai Somavaaram. This temple holds the festival image of the Ekambaranathar temple, which is located at the foothills. The temples of the Namakkal district are widely known across south India for its unique sculpture.Namakkal Rock Fort:
The Rock Fort is on the summit of the rock, and the remnants in brick and stone still bear the brunt of the skirmishes to lay seize to the fort by the Cholas in the 9th Century.[2] There are two rock–cut cave temples located on both sides of the hill dedicated to Narasimhaswamy and Ranganathasamy. There is also a 18 feet tall Hanuman statue carved out of a single stone at the Hanuman Temple.Tiruchengode:
Tiruchengode is 35 km from Namakkal. It is one of the seven Sivasthalams in Kongunadu. The Arthanareeswarar Temple is located on a hill. The presiding deity is depicted as half-male and half-female, vertically to represent Shiva and Parvati worshipped as one form. It is considered one of the oldest temples in this region.Kolli Hills:
Kolli Hills are situated on Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 1200 mts in the Namakkal District and are 45 km from Namakkal town. The Kolli Hills are known for medicinal herbs and plants that grow in abundance on the hill slopes. The Arapaleswarar Temple, the Horticulture Farm, the Herbal Farm, Agaya Gangai waterfalls and the Telescope House are the places to visit for the interested tourist. The Valvil Ori festival is organised here every year during the month August
