Dharamshala is the district headquarters of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra district was formerly part of the British province of Punjab. Initially, the administrative headquarters of the district was in Kangra, but in 1855 it was shifted to Dharamshala. Dharamshala is 18 km from Kangra.
