Thoothukudi is known as Tuticorin. Tuticorin is a city in Tamilnadu state of southern India . It is the headquarters of Tuticorin District. Tuticorin is surrounded on the north by the districts of Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram, on the east and south-east by Gulf of Mannar and on the west and south-west by the district of Tirunelveli.Tuticorin is also known as Thoothukudi. Also popularly known as ‘Pearl City’, Tuticorin is a seaport that serves South Tamilnadu, as well as the inland cities of Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli. The city, which lies about 540 km South West of Madras in the Gulf of Mannar, has a tropical climate with hot and humid environ round the year.Tuticorin is a main Port city of India . The major harbor of Tuticorin is well known as pearl diving, fishing centre and shipbuilding. The city is also known as ” Pearl City ” and “Muthu Nagar”. Tuticorin is famous for pearl fishing, production of salt, fishing and other related business. Totally 70% salt is manufactured in Tuticorin.
The district of Tuticorin (previously Thoothukudi) is situated in the extreme southeastern corner of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded on the north by the districts of Tirunelveli, Virudunagar and Ramanathapuram, on the east and southeast by Gulf of Mannar and on the west and southwest by the district of Tirunelveli. Tuticorin is the district headquarters of the district of the same name. One of the major ports in the country, Tuticorin was at one time known for its pearls and was one of the most prosperous cities on the Fisheries Coast (It is a major pearl fishing center with Hyderabad now taking over as the center of the artificial pearl industry in the south). Tuticorin, now better known for its fertilizer and heavy water plants, as well as its thermal power station is also a major salt production center.

History of Tuticorin City:
Tuticorin has been traditionally known for its pearl fishery and shipbuilding. It was an important seaport during the reign of the Pandyas. The major harbor of Thoothukudi is well known for as a pearl diving and fishing center. History shows that Thoothukudi was founded by the Portuguese in 1548, annexed by the Dutch in 1658 and ceded to the British in 1825. It also became the epicenter of India’s freedom movement in the early 20th century.

Ettaiyapuram Palace:
As a famous tourist spot, the palace is located in the town of Ettaiyapuram in Tuticorin district. The palace became a post for drawing taxes from the local chiefs under the reign of the Pandyas at Madurai.Kattabomman Memorial Fort:
Tuticorin is also home to Kattabomman Memorial Fort built up by the Government of Tamilnadu in 1974. Under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India, the fort has a temple nearby, dedicated to Sri Devi Jakkammal, the hereditary Goddess of Kattabomman.Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary:
Sprawling in an area of 223 sq kms in Tirunelveli district, the sanctuary is a popular hunt for botanists and ornithologists as it is home to a great variety of flora and fauna. Tourists can expect of some great fun amidst the gallery of varied species of animals and dense forests.Panchalankurichi:
Just about 18 kms from Tuticorin, this is a small hamlet with a great historical significance as the great warrior Katta Bomman known as “Veerapandiya Kattabomman” put up resistance against the British regime in the 17th Century AD here.The Basilica of a Lady of Snows:
Built in the honor of Mother Mary, the church came up some 400 years ago. Acknowledging its antiquity and popularity, Pope John Paul II raised this Church to the status of “Basilica” in 1982 in memory of its fourth centenary celebrations.Tiruchendur Temple:
This temple is one of the six Aarupadai veedu shrines of Murugan, which is dedicated to Lord Subramanya. A spectacular sight for tourists, the temple presents a mystical aura with the sea at the backdrop.Tuticorin Port:
Around 20 kms east of Tuticorin Old Bus stand is Tuticorin Port. Strategically built very close to the major International sea routes, Tuticorin Port handles a variety of international and domestic cargoes. The sight of the cargoes loading and unloading is indeed worth a treat amidst the sea expanse.Tenkasi:
Tenkasi, the pilgrim centre also known as the Kasi (Varanasi) of the South situated 53 km north of Tirunelveli, is famous for the Vishwanatha temple dedicated to Lord Siva. The temple has remarkable sculptures dated to the end of 17C. 2m high figures of Shiva, dancing Kali, Krishna, Rati and Bhikshatanamurti are some among others. The flagstaff of the temple that is believed to be 400 years old, is noteworthy for its sculptural beauty. Tenkasi was the home of the later Pandya chiefs in the 15C-16C and later the Madurai Nayakas. The famous Courtrallam waterfalls is located near to this place.Kazhugumalai:
Kazhugumalai means hill inhabited by eagles, located 56 kms north of Tirunelveli is a treasure trove of indescribably beautiful Jaina sculptures. There are ponds on either side of the hill and the hilltop offers a breathtaking view of paddy fields interspersed with palmyra trees. Several Jain carvings are seen on the hill, which has made this place an important Jain pilgrim center. The place also houses several religious shrines including the famous Kazhugachalamurthy Temple and Our Lady Lourdes Mary RC Church.Kazhugachalamurthy Temple locally called ‘Vettuvar Koil’ dates back to 8th century is a rare example of Pandya style of architecture and is worth visiting. Dedicated to Lord Subramania, the temple is carved out of a huge single rock. The unique feature of this temple is that rather than rising from the foundations, it was chiselled from the top. The idol of presiding deity Kazhugachalamurthy (Aarumugaswami ) is kept inside in a cave. Two friezes of ganas (demons) can be seen in the front porch of the temple. A holy water tank called Valli Sunai which is considered to be of great medicinal value is located at the foot of the 300 feet high hill. The octagonal shaped top of the vimana ( tower) is located upside down and decorated with lion heads. The temple has another four towers with the figures of Siva and Parvathi in the east, Lord Dakshinamurthi by playing a mrithungam in the south , Narasimha in the west and Brahma on lotus in the north.Shengaltheri:
Located 68kms from Tirunelveli, Shengaltheri in the Kalakadu mountain area is a picnic spot famed for its natural beauty, healthy climate and perpetual waterfalls. As it comes under Kalakadu Wild Life sanctuary, prior permission has to be obtained from Deputy Director of Wildlife- Ambasamudram, Mundandurai and Kalakadu wild life sanctuary for going to Shengaltheri. P.W.D. Rest House and bungalows are available for accommodation purpose.
Kulasekarapattinam:
Kulasekharapattinam, a coastal village with a fine beach, is located 68km from Tirunelveli and 20 Kms from Tiruchendur. The place is famous for three temples namely Muthuraman temple, Katchiappar temple and Chidarambeswar temple. The Muthuraman temple is known for the popular ‘Dasara’ festival held in the month of September- October that is participated by the folk dance artists from all over the state. In ancient days, this village is used as a port.Manapad:
Manapad, situated 70 km away from Tirunelveli and 18 km south of Tiruchendur is a predominantly Roman Catholic coastal village. The village is famous for the 400- year old Holy Cross Church built in the year1581 on the sea-shore which has believed to be a fragment of the true cross of Jerusalem. Thousand of devotees congregate here during the festival season from 1st to 14th September every year, when the holy cross is publicly displayed. Manapad is said to have some connection with St. Francis Xavier. It is one of the first places to be visited by the saint in 1542 when he initiated missionary activity on the Fishery coast. He is said to have lived and prayed in a cavern on the seaward face of a cliff.Ettayapuram:
Ettaiyapuram, situated 72-km from Tirunelveli is the birthplace of the famous revolutionary Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi. Ettayapuram Palace and Bharathiar Mani Mandapam, built in the memory of the port, are the main tourist attractions here.Kanyakumari:
Kanyakumari is one of the holiest city situated 83km south of Tirunelveli. The place is named after the deity Goddess Parvathi as Kanya Kumari (Virgin goddess) for whom the Kumari Amman temple is dedicated. Kanyakumari is the southern most tip of Indian Sub Continent surrounded by three oceans; Bay of Bengal in the east, Arabian Sea in the west and the Indian Ocean in the south. The beach itself is a beautiful sight with multi-coloured sand. Beautiful views of sunrise and sunset is the main attraction of this place. The full moon in the month of April is especially unusual when you should be able to see the sun and the moon on the same horizon.There is a memorial dedicated to Swami Vivekananda a great reformer and saint on a rocky promontory just over 400 meters off shore where he used to sit in long and deep meditation. Alvar Tirunagari is one among the nine famous Vaishnavaite temples situated in Kanyakumari (83km south of Tirunelveli) dedicated to Lord Adinatha, the first Jain Thirthankara. The temple has a musical instrument called Nadaswaram which is made of stone and played during the temple festival. A tree is preserved here and considered sacred as it is believed that the saint Namalvar attained enlightenment under it.
