Talakad is situated on the banks of the Kapila Cauvery River. Talakad is about 130 Kms from Bangalore and 50 Kms from Mysore. River Cauvery makes a sharp turn here.Talakad Panchalinga Darshana: In honour of above five Shiva temples, a fair is held once every 12 years called Panchalinga Darshana. The Panchalinga Darshana is held on a new moon day in the month of Karthika when two stars conjoin, the stars of Khuha Yoga and Vishaka. The last Panchalinga Darshana held in 2006. |

| It was a capital of the Ganga Dynasty (350-999 AD). It was the capital of several dynasties that ruled over Karnataka. Then it was ruled by the Cholas of Tamil Nadu from the 11th to the 12th century. Then Talakad came under the Hoysalas in the 12th century after this the Vijayanagar Kings and the Maharajas of Mysore patronized this place.Talakad once had over 30 temples that today are buried in sand. Among the temples of Talakad, the Pathaleshwara or Vasukishwara, Maruleshwara or Saikateshwara, Arkeshwara, Vaidyanathee-shwara and Mallikarjuna temples, the five Lingams believed to represent the five faces of Shiva. The Pataleshwara Shivalingam is said to change colors during the day (red in the morning, black in afternoon and white in the evening). There is also Keerthinarayana temple, a Vishnu temple of 12th century is built in the Chalukyan style. |
