Samut Prakan province lies directly south of Bangkok at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River where it empties into the Gulf of Thailand combining industrial port facilities with cultural attractions and riverine landscapes. The provincial capital Samut Prakan City (also called Pak Nam) features the imposing Phra Samut Chedi a riverside pagoda visible from great distances. The Ancient City (Muang Boran) offers an extensive outdoor museum of Thai architectural heritage while crocodile farms and river markets provide unique experiences.

Songthaews serve as primary local transport within Samut Prakan City and to major attractions including the Ancient City and crocodile farms. Boats provide access to river markets and some attractions along the Chao Phraya River. Motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks operate within town areas for short trips. Private car hire recommended for visiting scattered attractions across the province. Buses connect Samut Prakan with Bangkok and neighboring provinces.

Samut Prakan's cuisine features fresh seafood from the Gulf of Thailand and freshwater fish from the Chao Phraya River estuary including grilled pla kapong and spicy curries. The province is known for its riverine food culture with markets serving traditional boat noodles fresh fruits and seafood dishes. Night markets offer street food favorites including grilled meats spicy salads and Thai-Chinese specialties. Samut Prakan celebrates Songkran in April with water blessing ceremonies at Phra Samut Chedi and riverside activities along the Chao Phraya. The province holds annual boat races on the river during the rainy season between July and September. The Ancient City hosts special cultural events and ceremonies during important Thai holidays. Temple fairs occur throughout the year at major temples especially during Buddhist holy days.

Samut Prakan offers diverse attractions easily accessible from Bangkok though traffic can significantly affect travel times. Visit popular attractions like the Ancient City early morning to avoid crowds and heat. Carry cash as many smaller establishments do not accept cards; ATMs available in town areas.
