Phatthalung occupies a strategic location in southern Thailand, situated between Songkhla Lake and the border with Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The region combines wetland ecosystems, rubber plantations, and traditional Muslim communities that preserve distinct cultural practices. Its location on Thailand's southern peninsula gives it a blend of Thai, Malay, and Chinese influences visible in local architecture, cuisine, and daily life.

The province serves as an important transport link between western and eastern coasts of southern Thailand, with Highway 409 crossing through its territory.

December through March offers relatively drier weather, though tropical conditions persist year-round. The monsoon seasons from October to November and April to May bring heavier rainfall that can affect outdoor activities. Temperatures remain warm to hot throughout the year, with slightly cooler conditions during the December-January period.

Bird watching and wetland exploration are best during months when rainfall is lighter and water levels are stable.

Phatthalung lies along Highway 409, which connects to major routes leading to Hat Yai and other southern Thai cities. The nearest significant airports are in Hat Yai and Surat Thani, each requiring several hours of road travel. Bus services connect the province to Bangkok and other major southern Thai cities.

Most visitors arrive by private vehicle or bus, as the province lacks major air infrastructure of its own.

Songthaews provide local transport within towns and to nearby communities. Motorbike taxis offer quick trips for short distances, particularly in urban areas. Private vehicle rental provides the most flexibility for exploring scattered attractions throughout the province.

Road connections are generally adequate, though rural areas may have limited public transport options.

Southern Thai cuisine with Malay influences dominates local menus, featuring bold flavors and extensive use of fresh seafood. Dishes incorporate coconut milk, turmeric, and aromatic spices characteristic of the region. Islamic dietary laws influence food preparation, with chicken, beef, and seafood featuring more prominently than pork.

Local markets offer fresh produce from the surrounding agricultural areas, including fruits and vegetables that thrive in the southern climate.

Ramadan and Eid celebrations follow the Islamic calendar and significantly affect daily life and business hours in Muslim communities. Traditional Thai festivals like Songkran in April are also observed throughout the province. Local events celebrate traditional crafts, particularly basket weaving and other handicrafts for which the area is known.

Agricultural fairs and temple events occur throughout the year, reflecting the province's blend of religious and cultural traditions.

Respect Islamic customs by dressing modestly, especially when visiting rural communities and religious sites. Be mindful during prayer times when some businesses may close temporarily. The province maintains a more traditional pace of life—patience and respect go far in positive interactions.

Carry cash for transactions in smaller communities, as card acceptance may be limited. Sun protection and insect repellent are useful year-round in this tropical climate.
