Roi Et province occupies Thailand's northeastern Isan region characterized by gently rolling plains agricultural landscapes and traditional Lao-influenced culture. The provincial capital Roi Et town features the impressive Bueng Phalan Chai lake with its walking paths and statue of the province's most famous resident Phra Achan Man Purithatto Thera. The province name literally means one hundred one though today only around 50 Buddhist temples remain from the original 101 that gave the area its name.

November to February offers cool comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring temples and cultural sites without extreme heat. March through May brings increasing temperatures though many cultural sites offer shade and early morning visits remain comfortable. The rainy season from June to October brings regular afternoon showers though mornings are often clear; landscapes remain lush green and rice paddies are particularly photogenic during the wet season.

Roi Et is approximately 500 kilometers northeast of Bangkok reachable via Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) and Highway 214 with journey times of 6-7 hours by car. Regular buses depart from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) taking 7-8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Roi Et Airport offers limited domestic flights from Bangkok though schedules are subject to change. Train service is not available directly to Roi Et province.

Songthaews serve as the primary local transport within Roi Et town and to nearby temples with negotiated fares for longer distances to rural sites. Tuk-tuks operate within town for short trips. Motorbike rentals available in town for independent exploration though roads can be challenging in rural areas. Private car hire recommended for visiting scattered temples and attractions across the province. Buses connect major towns within Roi Et province.

Roi Et's cuisine follows classic Isan traditions featuring sticky rice spicy som tam grilled chicken (kai yang) and laab dishes popular throughout northeastern Thailand. The province is known for its fermented fish products and spicy dipping sauces served with raw vegetables. Local markets feature grilled freshwater fish from the Mekong region plus preserved meats and seasonal fruits. Night markets in Roi Et town offer street food favorites including sai krok Isan sausage and spicy papaya salad prepared to order.

Roi Et Rocket Festival occurs annually in May featuring traditional bamboo rockets launched to encourage rainfall with accompanying fairground atmosphere and cultural performances. Songkran in April features water blessing ceremonies at temples and community gatherings throughout the province. Bun Bang Fai rocket festival includes traditional music dance competitions and beauty pageants. The province holds temple fairs during cooler months with merit-making ceremonies and traditional markets.

Roi Et offers authentic Isan experiences with minimal tourist infrastructure. Carry cash as most establishments do not accept cards; ATMs available in Roi Et town. English proficiency is very limited outside basic hotels; basic Thai phrases or translation assistance essential. Respecting local customs is important especially during religious festivals and temple visits. The climate is extremely hot March-May; plan activities for early morning or late afternoon. Rice paddies are private property; ask permission before entering for photography.
