The Phi Phi Islands are an archipelago in the Andaman Sea within Krabi province, famed worldwide for sheer limestone cliffs rising from turquoise water. Phi Phi Don, the largest island, holds the villages and resorts, while uninhabited Phi Phi Leh shelters Maya Bay, made famous by the film The Beach.

Scenery is the reason people cross the world for Phi Phi: towering karst walls, white-sand coves and some of Thailand's clearest snorkelling water. Despite heavy popularity, dawn boat trips, the Phi Phi viewpoint and quieter corners of Phi Phi Don still deliver genuinely spectacular moments.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh is the iconic sight, alongside Pileh Lagoon's emerald water enclosed by cliffs and the Viking Cave's dramatic rock face. On Phi Phi Don, the twin bays of Ton Sai and Loh Dalum seen from the island viewpoint form one of Thailand's most photographed panoramas.

Boat tours circle Phi Phi Leh, stopping at Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and snorkelling spots rich with reef fish. Divers rate the surrounding sites highly, including trips toward Shark Point. On Phi Phi Don you can hike to the viewpoint, kayak between bays, take a cooking class or simply settle onto a beach.

Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon on Phi Phi Leh top every itinerary, best visited at opening time before day-trip fleets arrive. The Phi Phi Don viewpoint hike rewards a sweaty climb with the classic twin-bay vista, and Bamboo Island just north offers powdery sand and easy snorkelling.

Long Beach and Loh Ba Kao on Phi Phi Don stay far quieter than Ton Sai, reachable by longtail or coastal paths. Early risers can charter a boat for sunrise at Pileh Lagoon and have the water nearly alone, while the island's east-coast bays see a fraction of the main beaches' traffic.

Ton Sai village retains a working community with a mosque at its heart, reflecting the Muslim heritage of many Andaman islanders. Watching longtail boatmen at work, eating at family-run southern Thai kitchens and observing daily village life offer glimpses beyond the resort surface.

The islands sit within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, protecting coral reefs, sea cliffs and nesting swiftlets in the Viking Cave. Snorkelling and diving reveal reef sharks, turtles and abundant fish, while kayaking under the karst walls gives a sea-level sense of their scale.

Families do best on the quieter beaches such as Loh Ba Kao or Long Beach, where resorts offer calm shallows and space to play. Snorkelling trips with life jackets suit school-age children, though parents should note the island's boat-only access and the party atmosphere around central Ton Sai at night.

Phi Phi Don is known for energetic nightlife concentrated around Ton Sai and Loh Dalum, with beach bars, fire shows and music running late. Travellers seeking quiet evenings should book resorts on the northern or eastern beaches, well away from the central village.

The Phi Phi viewpoint above Ton Sai delivers the definitive twin-bay shot, best in morning light. Maya Bay's white curve against sheer cliffs, the green water of Pileh Lagoon and longtail boats moored in shallow turquoise water are all endlessly photogenic; a polarising filter helps with glare.

Fishing families, many of Muslim heritage, settled these islands long before tourism, and coconut plantations once covered parts of Phi Phi Don. The 2000 film The Beach propelled Maya Bay to global fame, and the islands rebuilt substantially after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck Ton Sai.

Island life blends southern Thai Buddhist and Muslim traditions, with the village mosque and small shrines coexisting alongside the tourist economy. Respect for the sea runs deep among boat families, and modest dress is appreciated when walking through the village away from the beach.

November to April brings calm seas, high visibility for snorkelling and reliable boat schedules, with December to February the sweet spot for weather. The monsoon months from roughly June to October mean rougher crossings and occasional cancellations, but also thinner crowds and lower prices.

Expect the Andaman pattern: dry and settled from November to April, hottest from March to May, then southwest monsoon rains and swell from roughly June to October. Boat operations and some park areas may be restricted in the wet season, so build flexibility into monsoon-season plans.

Islanders mark national festivals such as Songkran in April and Loy Krathong in November, when krathongs float off the beaches. Otherwise the calendar is driven by the tourism seasons; check locally for village events and any national park conservation closures affecting visits.

Arrive by ferry and spend the first afternoon on Long Beach or exploring Ton Sai, then climb to the viewpoint for late-afternoon light. Next morning, take an early boat around Phi Phi Leh for Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, snorkel at Bamboo Island after lunch, and finish with a seafood dinner in the village.

A single day trip from Phuket or Krabi covers the headline sights at a rush. Two to three nights on Phi Phi Don is far better, allowing an early Phi Phi Leh tour, the viewpoint hike, snorkelling or diving, and time on the quieter beaches.

Ferries and speedboats reach Phi Phi Don from Phuket, Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta, with crossings generally between 45 minutes and two hours depending on the route and vessel. There is no airport; the nearest are Phuket and Krabi, both connecting to the piers by road transfer.

Phi Phi Don has no cars or motorbikes; people walk the village lanes and paths, and longtail boats serve as taxis between beaches. Some resort areas on the northern bays are reached only by boat, so pack light and confirm transfer arrangements with your accommodation.

Ton Sai Pier on Phi Phi Don is the island's transport hub, handling all ferries and speedboats. On the mainland, Krabi's Klong Jilad pier, Ao Nang's Nopparat Thara pier and Phuket's Rassada pier are the main departure points, each linked to their respective airports by road.

The islands are accessible year-round, though Maya Bay and other national park sites keep set visiting hours and may close seasonally for reef recovery. Boat tours typically run from early morning to late afternoon; check current park rules when booking.

A national park entrance fee applies for Phi Phi Leh and other protected areas, usually collected with your tour or at landing points, and a small clean-up fee has been charged on arrival at Phi Phi Don. Fees change periodically, so carry cash and confirm current rates locally.

Ton Sai village is packed with eateries, from grilled-seafood barbecues and southern Thai curry shops to pizza, sushi and beach cafes. Resort restaurants serve the outlying bays. Prices run higher than the mainland since everything arrives by boat.

Seafood dominates, grilled over coals and paired with spicy southern dips, alongside massaman curry, roti and halal dishes reflecting the island's Muslim roots. Fresh fruit shakes and fried rice remain reliable budget staples; expect southern Thai chilli heat unless you ask for mild.

Phi Phi Don offers everything from backpacker hostels around Ton Sai to upscale resorts on Laem Tong and Loh Ba Kao in the quieter north. Phi Phi Leh has no accommodation. Book well ahead for the December to February peak, when the island fills quickly.

Phi Phi is pricier than mainland Krabi because supplies come by boat; budget travellers can still manage with hostels and simple eateries. Main costs are ferries, boat tours, park fees and accommodation, which spike in high season. Day trips are cheaper but far more rushed than staying over.

Shopping is limited to Ton Sai's lanes: beachwear, sarongs, souvenirs, dive shops and convenience stores. Pick up reef-safe sunscreen and dry bags before boat trips. Serious shopping is better done in Phuket or Krabi Town before you sail.

Watch your footing on boat transfers and wear life jackets when provided. Currents outside the bays can be strong, so snorkel where guides indicate. Avoid buckets-and-fire-show excess at night, guard valuables in hostels, and note that monsoon crossings can be rough for seasickness-prone travellers.

Phi Phi is challenging for limited mobility: access is by boat, often with beach landings, and the island's paths include steps and sandy stretches. Travellers with wheelchairs should contact resorts near Ton Sai Pier in advance and choose large ferries over longtail transfers where possible.

English is spoken throughout the tourism trade, and menus and signs cater to international visitors. Thai basics such as sawasdee and khop khun, offered with a smile and a wai, go a long way, and islanders appreciate polite greetings when you pass through the village.

Book early boats to Phi Phi Leh to beat the fleets, and reserve ferries and rooms ahead in peak season. Pack light for boat landings, keep electronics in dry bags, respect park rules at Maya Bay, and choose northern beaches if nightlife noise is a concern.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, a dry bag, water shoes and a hat; a snorkel mask of your own is handy for frequent swimmers. Cash is essential since ATMs on the island charge fees and card acceptance is patchy. A light jacket helps on breezy ferry crossings.

The reefs here have suffered from mass tourism, prompting Maya Bay's famous closure and recovery programme. Never touch coral, avoid anchoring operators, use reef-safe sunscreen, refuse single-use plastic and carry rubbish off the beaches; choose tour companies that follow national park guidelines.

Bamboo Island and Mosquito Island lie just north of Phi Phi Don, both with fine sand and snorkelling. Koh Lanta, Ao Nang and Railay are within ferry range for onward travel, and mainland Krabi's Emerald Pool and Tiger Cave Temple suit the days before or after your island stay.
