Chao Lao Beach is Chanthaburi's principal seaside stretch, a long ribbon of pale sand on the Gulf of Thailand in Tha Mai district. Backed by casuarina trees, low-rise resorts and seafood restaurants, it offers an unhurried alternative to the busier resort coasts of eastern Thailand.

Chao Lao suits travellers who want sea, seafood and quiet without long-haul effort. The beach is broad and swimmable, sunsets over the Gulf are lovely, and the Khung Kraben mangrove boardwalk and scenic coastal road sit on its doorstep, all within a day's reach of Bangkok.

The long, gently shelving sand is the main draw, with calm swimming in the right seasons and space to spread out even on weekends. Fresh crab and squid at beachfront restaurants, evening squid-boat lights on the horizon and easy side-trips to Khung Kraben Bay round out its appeal.

Swim, walk the tideline at dawn, and settle into a deckchair with fresh fruit or grilled seafood. Cycle or drive the coastal road to viewpoints and neighbouring bays, visit the mangrove boardwalk and aquarium at Khung Kraben, or simply watch fishing boats work the bay.

The beach itself, especially its quieter northern and southern ends, is the attraction, along with sunset from the sand. Nearby, the Khung Kraben Bay Royal Development Study Center, Noen Nang Phaya Viewpoint and Kung Wiman Beach form a natural trio of add-ons.

Walk far enough from the resort cluster and you find near-empty sand, shell drifts and fishing families mending nets. Early morning brings monks on alms rounds in nearby villages, and small beachside shrines mark the coast's fishing traditions.

Chao Lao remains a working coast: fishing communities land crab and squid, and their catch goes straight to the restaurants. Sharing a long seafood dinner Thai-style, and visiting the royal development project at Khung Kraben, connect a beach stay to local life.

The Gulf here is shallow and generally gentle, with casuarina shade behind the sand and mangroves and seagrass beds in the adjacent bay. Birdlife is rich around Khung Kraben, and the coastal road makes cycling and easy exploration part of a stay.

Families do well at Chao Lao: the water shelves gradually, resorts cater to Thai family groups, and the mangrove boardwalk and aquarium nearby entertain children for hours. Sandcastle space is unlimited, and evening meals on the sand are relaxed and informal.

Nightlife is low-key by design: beachfront restaurants and resort bars serve dinner and drinks into the evening, sometimes with live acoustic music on weekends. For anything livelier, Chanthaburi town is about half an hour away, itself a quiet evening destination.

Sunset over the Gulf is the signature shot, with squid boats' green lights appearing after dark. Dawn light on the empty tideline, casuarina silhouettes, and the sweep of the bay from the nearby Noen Nang Phaya Viewpoint give variety within minutes of the sand.

The coast around Chao Lao developed from fishing settlements, growing gradually as Thai weekenders discovered the province's beaches. The royal development project at neighbouring Khung Kraben Bay, begun in the 1980s, restored the bay ecosystem and helped anchor the area's steady, low-rise style of tourism.

Life here follows the sea and the orchards: fishing boats, shrimp farms and fruit plantations shape daily rhythms, and hospitality remains family-run. Visitors who greet with a wai, dress modestly off the sand and try the local catch fit easily into the community's pace.

November to February delivers the most reliable sunshine, calm seas and cool evenings. March to May is hot but fine for swimming, while the rainy months from roughly June to October bring rough patches and showers, with quiet beaches and low prices between storms.

Expect a hot season from March to May, heavy monsoon rain from roughly June to October when swimming can be less inviting, and a dry, breezy cool season from November to February. Chanthaburi is among Thailand's wetter provinces, so pack for showers outside the cool months.

Thai long weekends and school holidays animate the beach, and Songkran in April brings water-splashing celebrations. Loy Krathong in November sees krathongs floated on the water, and the province's fruit festival season around May and June is worth combining with a beach stay.

Spend day one swimming and settling into beach pace, with sunset drinks on the sand. On day two, do the Khung Kraben mangrove boardwalk in the morning, drive the coastal road to Noen Nang Phaya and Kung Wiman in the afternoon, and finish with a seafood feast back at Chao Lao.

One full day gives a taste, but two nights suit the beach's unhurried character, allowing time for the mangroves, viewpoints and neighbouring bays. Many Bangkok families come for exactly this length of weekend escape.

Chao Lao lies in Tha Mai district roughly twenty five kilometres west of Chanthaburi town. Buses and minivans from Bangkok reach Chanthaburi in about four hours, after which a taxi, songthaew charter or hire car covers the final half hour to the beach.

Along the beachfront, walking and bicycles cover most needs, and resorts often lend or rent bikes. A car or motorbike is valuable for the coastal road, viewpoints and mangrove centre, as public transport along the shore is minimal.

The nearest major transport hub is Chanthaburi bus terminal, half an hour away, with services along the eastern seaboard. Trat and U-Tapao airports each sit well over an hour distant, so most visitors arrive overland from Bangkok or Pattaya.

The beach is public and open at all times, with restaurants and shops keeping daytime-to-evening hours. Swimming is best in daylight; lifeguard coverage is limited, so treat dusk swims with caution.

Access to the beach is free. Costs arise only from parking at some access points, deckchair or equipment rental where offered, and food and drink from the beachfront businesses.

Beachfront seafood restaurants are the heart of Chao Lao dining, serving crab, prawns, squid and whole grilled fish, with Thai standards for those avoiding seafood. Small shops and a scattering of cafes fill the gaps, and 7-Eleven convenience stores are close by for basics.

Chao Lao offers a spread of beachfront resorts, mid-range hotels and simple guesthouses, mostly low-rise and family-oriented. Rooms fill on Thai long weekends and holidays, when booking ahead is essential; weekday stays are notably cheaper and quieter.

Chao Lao is affordable by beach standards: seafood meals cost less than in major resorts, guesthouses suit modest budgets, and the sights nearby are free or cheap. Transport is the main cost; sharing a hire car keeps a weekend very reasonable. Carry Thai Baht in cash.

Expect beach shops selling swimwear, snacks and inflatables rather than serious retail. Local stalls offer dried seafood and seasonal fruit, while gems, preserves and broader souvenirs are best bought in Chanthaburi town's markets.

Swim within your depth and watch for occasional jellyfish, especially in warmer months; heed any flags or local advice. Currents strengthen in the monsoon, sun protection is essential year-round, and belongings are safest kept with your group rather than unattended on the sand.

Resort areas offer level access to restaurants and some paved paths, but soft sand remains challenging for wheelchairs. Several beachfront restaurants can be reached without steps, and staff at family-run places are generally quick to help visitors with mobility needs.

Thai is the working language, with functional English at resorts and larger restaurants. A wai greeting, sawasdee and khop khun cover courtesies, and pointing at tanks or displays is a time-honoured way to order seafood.

Visit midweek for the quietest sand, book ahead for Thai holidays, and schedule the mangrove boardwalk for morning coolness. Rinse off sand before entering rooms and restaurants, and keep valuables minimal on the beach.

Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent for dusk and a light rain layer outside the cool season cover the essentials. Bring cash for beachfront stalls, and water shoes help children on shell patches.

Take litter off the sand, skip single-use plastics where possible, and choose seafood from the local catch rather than imported options. Respecting the neighbouring Khung Kraben conservation zone and its no-take rules keeps the bay healthy for the fishing families who depend on it.

The Khung Kraben Bay Royal Development Study Center is minutes away, with Noen Nang Phaya Viewpoint and Kung Wiman Beach along the coastal road. Chanthaburi town's cathedral, waterfront and gem market lie about half an hour inland, and Namtok Phlio National Park extends a longer loop.
