Best Time to Visit
Jiangsu has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool, damp winters. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best seasons, with mild temperatures ideal for strolling Suzhou's classical gardens and the canals of Zhouzhuang and Tongli. Late spring also brings blooming gardens, while summer's heat and humidity make walking tours less comfortable across the whole province.
How to Reach / Travel Access
Nanjing Lukou International Airport and Sunan Shuofang International Airport near Wuxi both serve the province. Jiangsu has one of China's densest high-speed rail networks: Shanghai to Suzhou takes about 25 minutes, and Shanghai to Nanjing takes roughly an hour, making the province exceptionally easy to explore as a series of day trips from Shanghai or a longer standalone rail itinerary.
Travel Tips
Visit Suzhou's classical gardens early in the morning to enjoy them before tour groups arrive. The water towns of Zhouzhuang and Tongli are compact and walkable, with boat rides available along the canals for an additional fee. Given Jiangsu's proximity to Shanghai, many travelers base themselves there and take day trips rather than relocating between cities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit Suzhou as a day trip from Shanghai?
Yes, high-speed trains take about 25 minutes, making Suzhou's gardens and canals an easy and popular day trip from Shanghai, though staying overnight allows a quieter early-morning garden visit.
Which water town is better, Zhouzhuang or Tongli?
Zhouzhuang is more famous and correspondingly busier, while Tongli offers a similar canal-town atmosphere with somewhat fewer crowds, making it a good alternative for a quieter experience.
What should I see in Nanjing besides the Confucius Temple?
The Nanjing City Wall, one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China, and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum set in wooded hills are both well worth adding to a Nanjing itinerary.
Are Suzhou's gardens all similar to each other?
No, each classical garden β the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, and others β has a distinct layout and character, so visiting more than one reveals different design philosophies.
