Xuanwu Lake is Nanjing's largest urban lake and one of the biggest lakes located within a Chinese city, bordering the old city wall on the northeastern side of central Nanjing near the main railway station. Known historically as Houhu, or 'Rear Lake,' it has served variously as an imperial garden, a naval training ground, and a public retreat since as far back as the Six Dynasties period some 1,500 years ago.
