Zhouzhuang is the most famous of the Jiangnan water towns, located roughly 30 kilometers southeast of Suzhou in Kunshan, with a settlement history stretching back nearly 900 years to the Song dynasty. The town flourished as a merchant center during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its wealth is reflected in well-preserved compounds such as the Shen and Zhang family residences, associated with the legendary Ming-era merchant Shen Wansan. Its best-known landmark is the Twin Bridges (Shuang Qiao), where the Shide and Yongan bridges meet at a right angle, forming a shape often compared to an ancient key; the scene gained national fame after being featured in a well-known 1984 oil painting by artist Chen Yifei.
