Slender West Lake (Shou Xihu) is a narrow, winding scenic waterway in Yangzhou, developed over centuries into one of China's most celebrated garden landscapes and named for its elongated shape, in deliberate contrast to the rounder West Lake in Hangzhou. The lake reached its greatest splendor during the Qing dynasty, when wealthy salt merchants built elaborate private gardens along its banks partly to impress the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors during their southern tours, producing a chain of interconnected scenic spots rather than one formal garden.
