| Located in Udupi District, Karnataka, Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 247 sq km and is thick with evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats, and small patches of teak plantations. It is contiguous with the Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.The sanctuary is home to a variety of species including lion-tailed macaque, bonnet macaque, common langur, slender loris, sloth bear, gaur, wild pig, tiger, leopard, wild dog, jackal, chital, sambar, barking deer, otter, porcupine, Malabar giant squirrel and flying squirrel. Avifauna includes Malabar whistling thrush, Malabar grey hornbill, Malabar pied hornbill, great Indian hornbill, southern treepie, yellow bulbul, scarlet minivet, racket-tailed drongo, blacknaped blue flycatcher and quake babbler.Mookambika wildlife sanctuary is divided into a core zone (114 sq. km), buffer zone (90 sq. km) and tourism zone (43 sq. Km). This sanctuary is thick with evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats. |
| Some of the tree species found in this region includes Dipterocarpus indicus, Calophyllum tomentosum and Hopea parviflora. A rare species of climber Coscinium fenestratum are also found here. The endangered cane turtle is also found at this sanctuary. Mookambika wildlife sanctuary houses animals like Slender loris, lion-tailed macaque, sambar, chital, sloth bear, gaur, wild pig, sambar, barking deer, otter, porcupine, tiger and leopard. |
