About:

Khargone district is one of the 48 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and is a part of Indore division. The district headquarters are located at Khargone town.
The district lies in Nimar region, and is part of Indore Division.

Khargone district is surrounded by Dhar, Indore and Dewas in the north, Maharashtra to the south, Khandwa, Burhanpur in the east and Barwani in the west. The district forms almost the central section of Narmada valley which is bordered by Vindhyachal ranges in the north and Satpura ranges in the south. Narmada is the main river flowing through the district.

Khargone lies in a tract which has always been, historically important for its being on the easiest natural route that connects the northern & southern parts of India. Most parts of the district were included, at different times,in the kingdoms of the early Haihayas of Mahishmati, the Parmars of Malwa, the Ahirs of Asirgarh, Mohammedan kings of Mandu, the Moughals, the Peshwa & other Maratha Sardars – Holkar, Sciendia, Pawar.

Khargone is fastly growing as a city and now it has included lots of nearby villages like Jetapur into it. As of 2001[update] India census, Khargone had a population of 86,443. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Khargone has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 57%. In Khargone, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The major cash crops of Khargone District is Cotton and Chilly. It is India’s biggest Cotton producing district. Red chilly is exported to foreign countries.

Khargone (Madhya Pradesh) is geographically located at latitude (21.83 degrees) 21° 49′ 47″ North of the Equator and longitude (75.6 degrees) 75° 35′ 59″ East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of the world.

Climate/Weather:

Khargone generally has hot climate with little rain. The average rain fall is 831mm. The summers are long ranging from March to July. Monsoon is brief and arrives in mid August.

History of Khargone

The district has a long history. In ancient period, the Haihayas of Mahishmati (present day Maheshwar)ruled this region. In early medieval age, the area was under the Paramars of Malwa and the Ahirs of Asirgarh. In late medieval age, the area was under Malwa sultanate of Mandu. In 1531 CE, Gujarat sultan Bahadur Shah brought this area under his control. In 1562 CE, Akbar annexed this territory along with the whole Malwa to Mughal empire. In 1740 CE Marathas under the peshwa
brought the area under their control. In 1778 CE, Peshwa distributed this territory to the Maratha rulers, Holkars of Indore, Sindhias of Gwalior and Ponwars of Dhar. After the independence and merger of the Princely states with Union of India in 1948 CE, this territory became West Nimar district of Madhya Bharat.

The district is divided into 5 sub-divisions, which are further divided into 8 tehsils. Barwaha sub-division has only one tehsil, Barwaha. Bhikangaon sub-division has two tehsils, Bhikangaon and Jhiranya. Kasrawad sub-division has only Kasrawad tehsil while Khargone sub-division has three tehsils, Khargone, Bhagwanpura and Segaon.Mandaleshwar sub-division has one tehsil, Maheshwar.Khargone town is the administrative headquarters of the district. Other towns are Maheshwar, Kasrawad, Segaon, Bhagwanpura, Jhiranya,Bhikangaon and Barwah. Maheshwar is a place of tourist attraction asthe former capital of the Heheya Kingdom and Holkars of Indore.

The district consists 6 Vidhan-Sabha constituencies. These constituencies are Bhikangaon (ST), Barwaha, Maheshwar (SC), Kasrawad,
Khargone and Dhulkot (ST). All six Vidhan Sabha constituencies are part of Khargone Lok Sabha constituency.

The district has one Engineering College, three Pharmacy Colleges,One Pilate Training College and two Polytechnic Colleges along with several English and Hindi Medium schools and colleges, offering degrees in science and arts.

Nearest Railway Station:

The only railway line passing through the eastern parts of the district is the Khandwa-Indore section of meter gauge line of the Western Railways. The important rail heads are Barwaha & Sanawad. Nearest broad-gauge railway station is Khandwa (89 kms).

The nearest airport to Khargone is Indore (143 kms).

Road Transport:

Khargone is well connected by rail and road. The Agra – Mumbai road i.e. National Highway No. 3 passes through the district. The district is well linked to Indore, Khandwa, Dhar, Jhabua, Jalgaon, Dhule, by state highways.

Famous Navgrah mandir. 143 Kms from Indore (Railhead / Airport), 90 Kms from Khandwa (Railhead), 90 Kms from Barwani (If you are coming from Gujrat by State Highway 26), 70 Kms from Sendhawa (If you are entering from Maharashtra by Agra Mumbai Road – National Highway 3), 65 Kms from Dhamnod (If you are coming from Indore by Agra Mumbai Road – National Highway 3), 120 Kms from Dhar. A big market place for cotton. Many jinning factories.

Maheshwar –

Capital of famous Haihay king Sahasrarjun who defeated Ravan. Later capital of Great Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar is situated on the banks of Narmada. Also famous for its Maheshwari saris & temples. Tehsil headquarter.

Mandleshwar –

A place 8 Kms from Maheshwar. A hydel power generation plant is being constructed on river Narmada. Choli a place where you find encient Shiv Temples.

Oon –

14 kms from Khargone, famous for very old Parmar Hindu Temples & Jain temples.

Bakawa & Raverkhedi –

Tomb of Great Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao is at Raverkhedi. Bakawa is famous for its “Shivlings” made of stones from Narmada. These are the most respected “Shivlings”.

Dejla-Devada –

An earthen dam constructed on river Kunda. Irrigation in about 8000 hectares.

Sirvel Mahadeo –

About 55 Kms from Khargone. It is said that Ravan offered his heads here to Lord Shiv. Hence the name.Special Holidays with very attractive and discounted packages and hotel bookings.

Nanheshwar –

A place 20 Kms from Khargone towards Bhagwanpura, famous for ancient Shiv temples.

Barwah & Sanawad –

2 adjacent cities (10 Kms) with river Narmada flowing in-between. You have to go via these cities to reach Omkareshwar. Situated on the Indore-Ichchhapur highway – State Highway 27. You can reach Punasa from Sanawad where Indira Sagar Dam has been constructed on Narmada. You can reach Mandleshwar, Maheshwar and finally Dhamnod on Agra Mumbai Road (National Highway 3) from Barwah.
