Summary

Anamudi is located in Marayoor Village, Devikulam taluk, Idukki District, Kerala. Anamudi is the highest peak in the Western Ghats situated at a height of 2,695 metres (8,842 feet) above mean sea level. It is located in the southern part of Eravikulam National Park at the joint of Cardamom Hills, the Anaimalai Hills and the Palni Hills.The Nilagiri tahr in this park is a rare breed of mountain goat. Herds of tahrs grazing the hillside is a common scene here. Inside the park and the estates around in Anamalai, elephants roam freely. Anamudi trekking is easy grassland hikes that starts with an elevation at 2000 mts. Easiest hikes are the North and South slopes with less steeps and deep gorges, while the difficult treks are those of the East and West with even deeper gorge and valleys as well as rock faces. Trekkers/visitors/ adventure freaks can take the easier side to unearth the flora and fauna in the dense forest of Anaimudi. Many animal species that can be spotted here are nilgiri languor, leopards, tigers, macaques and so on. The Peak is also haven to wildlife travelers and nature lovers.This is a perfect place for trekking as enough facilities are arranged here for the tourists and they are permitted to go on foot to Anamudi.The summit of the Anamudi is vegetated with patches of stunted Arundinaria densifolia and Gaultheria fragrantissima (wintergreen), Anaphalis sp., Impatiens and some species of Eniocaulon.

Devikulam Hills Station:

The crisp and cool mountain air heavily laden with the fragrance of wild flowers and rare herbs is any nature lover’s paradise.

The Anamudi Shola National Park constitutes the Mannavan shola, Idivara shola and Pullardi shola, covering a total area of around 750 hectares. Anamudi Shola National Park is one of the few national parks in Kerala which have been declared protected areas by the Government of Kerala very recently.It is a part of Anamalai sub-cluster which was recently nominated for World Heritage Site under UNESCO’s World Heritage Programme.

Mathikettan Shola National Park:

Mathikettan Shola National Park is located at Poopara village near Udumbanchola, Idukki District.Mathikettan Shola National Park is a 12.82 km² , This tract, comprising part of the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR), had been notified as a Reserve Forest by the Travancore Government in 1897. Part of the land, prior to becoming a national park, had been leased out for the production of Cardamom.

Pampadum Shola National Park:

Pampadum Shola National Park is sitauted in Marayoor Village,Devikulam taluk, Idukki District, Kerala.This is the smallest National Park in the state covers only an area of 1.32 sq km.The Forest Department proposed that 32 square kilometres of mountain slopes contiguous to the Pampadum Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Anaimudi Shola National Park and the proposed Palani Hills national park be declared as sanctuary.
