Xixi National Wetland Park, in western Hangzhou, was designated in 2005 as China's first national wetland park, protecting a network of ponds, canals, and marshland that once formed a much larger wetland system around the city. Covering roughly 11 square kilometers, the park preserves traditional water-village scenery, including old farmhouses, fish ponds, and persimmon orchards, alongside rich birdlife and plant diversity, and can be explored by narrow boat along its maze of waterways. It offers a quieter, greener contrast to West Lake's more famous scenery, just a short distance away in the same city.

Xixi Wetland lies in the western part of Hangzhou, a short distance from West Lake and easily reached from the city center. The park's boundaries enclose a mix of open water, reed marsh, and traditional village-style buildings, with several entrance gates providing access to different sections of the wetland.

Xixi shares Hangzhou's humid subtropical climate, with mild, occasionally misty springs, hot and humid summers, comfortable and clear autumns, and cool, damp winters. Because much of the park is open water and marsh, it can feel noticeably cooler and breezier than the built-up city center, especially in summer.

Spring and autumn are particularly rewarding, with spring bringing blossoming plum trees in certain sections and autumn offering clear skies well suited to birdwatching and photography. Summer's lush greenery and lotus blooms are also appealing, while winter can be a quieter time to see the wetland's resident and migratory bird populations.

The Xixi area was historically a much larger wetland region on Hangzhou's outskirts, gradually shaped by centuries of local farming and fishing communities who built canals, ponds, and raised fields suited to the marshy terrain. As Hangzhou urbanized in the 20th century, much of the original wetland was lost to development, prompting the local government to establish a protected zone in 2005, recognized as China's first national-level wetland park, to preserve the remaining ecosystem and traditional water-village landscape.

Xixi represents an important example of urban wetland conservation in China, protecting both a distinctive ecosystem and a traditional way of life tied to water-based farming and fishing that has largely disappeared elsewhere around Hangzhou. The park's persimmon orchards and old village architecture offer a living link to this agricultural heritage, while its establishment as a national model has influenced wetland protection efforts elsewhere in the country.

The park typically operates roughly from early morning to early evening, generally around 7:00 or 8:00 to 17:30 or 18:00, with hours that may shift slightly by season. It's advisable to check current hours before visiting, particularly if planning a boat ride, since boat services may run on a more limited schedule.

Xixi Wetland typically charges an entrance fee to access the park, with boat rides through the canals available as a separate paid option. Prices are adjusted periodically, so checking current rates through official listings before visiting is recommended.

A half-day, roughly 3–4 hours, is generally enough to explore a good portion of the park on foot or by boat. Visitors wanting to cover more of the park's extensive trail network or spend more time birdwatching may prefer to allow a full day.

Most visitors stay in central Hangzhou near West Lake, given Xixi's short distance from the city center, rather than seeking accommodation immediately within or beside the wetland park itself, though a handful of nearby guesthouses cater to visitors wanting easier morning access.

West Lake and its surrounding temples are about 15–20 minutes away, making it easy to combine a Xixi Wetland visit with the city's other major sights in the same day or over a broader Hangzhou itinerary.

City bus routes connect Xixi Wetland's entrances directly to central Hangzhou, and taxis or rideshare are readily available. Hangzhou East Railway Station is roughly 30–40 minutes away by taxi, and the nearest Hangzhou Metro stations are a short additional connection from the park's entrances.

Paths and boat docks within the wetland can be uneven or slippery near the water, so appropriate footwear and caution are advised, particularly for families with children. As with other Hangzhou attractions, standard precautions around belongings in crowded areas apply.

Comfortable walking shoes for the park's raised paths and bridges, insect repellent given the wetland setting, and binoculars for birdwatching enthusiasts are all worth bringing. Sun protection and a light rain layer are useful given the open, exposed nature of much of the park.

Taking a boat ride is highly recommended for the fullest experience of the wetland's canal network, since much of the park's most scenic areas are best appreciated from the water. Visiting on a weekday morning offers a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere than weekend afternoons.
