Orange Isle, known in Chinese as Juzizhou, is a long, narrow river island stretching for several kilometers down the middle of the Xiang River in Changsha. Once known for its orange orchards, the island today is a landscaped riverside park connected to both banks by bridges, popular with locals for walking, cycling, and evening strolls along its tree-lined paths. Its most striking landmark is a colossal granite sculpture of a young Mao Zedong's head, commemorating his formative years studying and organizing in Changsha and referencing his famous 1925 poem Changsha, in which he recalls standing on the island gazing out over the river. Combining green space, riverside views, and a significant piece of modern Chinese revolutionary history, Orange Isle is one of the most visited public spaces in the city.

Orange Isle sits in the middle of the Xiang River in central Changsha, running parallel to the city's downtown district on the eastern bank and the Yuelu Mountain and university district on the western bank. It is connected to both sides of the river by bridges and is easily reached from central Changsha's commercial core near Wuyi Square.

Changsha has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers often exceeding 35 degrees Celsius and mild, damp winters. The open riverside setting of Orange Isle can feel breezier than the surrounding city, offering some relief on hot summer evenings.

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the length of the island, while evenings year-round are popular for their cooler air and, on selected occasions, fireworks displays over the river, making early evening one of the best times to visit regardless of season.

Orange Isle takes its name from the orange orchards that once grew along its banks, and the island has long been a scenic spot within Changsha, referenced in classical and modern Chinese poetry. Its modern fame grew significantly after the completion of the giant Mao Zedong sculpture in 2009, commemorating his early revolutionary activities in Changsha during the 1910s and 1920s, when he was a student and teacher in the city.

The island holds particular significance in modern Chinese political and literary history through its association with Mao Zedong's 1925 poem Changsha, in which he reflects on the river and his revolutionary aspirations while standing on the island. It remains an important site of secular pilgrimage for visitors interested in Mao's early life and a cherished public green space central to Changsha's civic identity.

Walk or cycle the length of the island's landscaped paths, view the massive granite Mao Zedong statue up close, watch fireworks displays over the river on scheduled evenings, and enjoy riverside views back toward both the downtown skyline and Yuelu Mountain.

The main sight is the enormous carved granite head of a young Mao Zedong, one of the largest stone sculptures of its kind in China, alongside landscaped gardens, riverside pavilions, and sweeping views of the Xiang River and Changsha skyline from various points along the island.

Orange Isle is accessible via a dedicated Changsha Metro station on the island itself, as well as by bridge on foot, bicycle, or the island's internal shuttle bus, with entrances connecting to both the eastern downtown side and the western Yuelu Mountain side of the city.

The park is generally open to the public throughout the day and into the evening, typically from early morning until around 10 or 11 at night, though scheduled fireworks displays and any special events may have their own timings, so checking current schedules is worthwhile.

Entry to Orange Isle park itself is free; the island is open-access parkland, though an internal shuttle or golf-cart service to cover its length typically charges a small separate fee.

A relaxed visit takes about one to two hours to walk or ride to the main statue and enjoy the riverside views, though visitors timing their trip around an evening fireworks display may want to allow more time.

Central Changsha on both sides of the river offers extensive accommodation options within a short distance of Orange Isle, from international hotels near Wuyi Square to more budget-friendly options near the university district on the western bank.

While the island itself has limited dining options, central Changsha's Wuyi Square and Taiping Street areas, a short ride away, offer an extensive range of Hunan restaurants and street food, making it easy to combine a park visit with a meal nearby.

Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy are close by on the western bank, while the Hunan Provincial Museum, Taiping Street, and the IFS district are all within a short ride on the eastern side of the river.

A Changsha Metro station serves Orange Isle directly, and bridges connect the island to bus routes on both riverbanks, making it one of the more conveniently accessible attractions in the city.

The park is generally very safe, but visitors should stay alert around the shuttle route and cycling paths, be mindful of crowds during fireworks displays, and take care near the riverbanks, especially in wet weather.

Bring comfortable walking or cycling shoes, water, sun protection for daytime visits, and a light jacket for cooler evening breezes off the river, along with a camera for the statue and skyline views.
