Fenghuang Ancient Town is a beautifully preserved historic town straddling the Tuojiang River in western Hunan's Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Built up over more than 1,300 years, its riverbanks are lined with wooden stilt houses, its streets paved with worn flagstone, and its skyline punctuated by watchtowers, arched stone bridges, and the historic North Gate Tower. Fenghuang has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool, misty winters. Spring and early summer bring the heaviest rainfall, which keeps the Tuojiang River flowing strongly, while autumn typically offers the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for exploring the town's narrow lanes.

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the most comfortable seasons for visiting, with mild temperatures and good conditions for river walks and photography. Evenings are recommended year-round, since the town's lantern-lit riverside comes alive after dark regardless of season, though summer and national holidays bring the largest crowds.
