Anhui Museum is the leading provincial museum of Anhui, holding a collection of roughly 220,000 cultural relics that trace the region's history from prehistory to the modern era. Its current home, the Shushan-district building that opened in 2011, was designed in a Huizhou-inspired style with interconnected courtyards and a central hall that channels rainwater from four directions, a nod to traditional local architecture. The museum's strengths include Shang and Zhou bronzes, Chu-state coins, Han-dynasty stone reliefs, Xin'an School calligraphy and painting, Huizhou woodcarving, and the so-called Four Treasures of the Study. As the flagship cultural institution of the province, it is generally regarded as the essential stop for understanding Anhui's civilization.

The museum sits in Shushan District in the western part of Hefei, the provincial capital of Anhui, about 500 meters south of Swan Lake and within the city's Shushan cultural and administrative area. Hefei itself lies in central Anhui, between the Yangtze and Huai river basins, and functions as the province's political, economic and transport hub. The museum's Shushan (new) building at 87 Huaining Road is the main visitor site; an older Luyang branch on Anqing Road, built in a Soviet-influenced style, also remains open with separate exhibitions.

Hefei has a humid subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June to August) are hot and humid, with the heaviest rainfall of the year and occasional heatwaves, while winters are cool and comparatively dry with occasional cold snaps. Because the museum is an indoor attraction, weather has less direct impact on a visit than it would for outdoor sites, but arriving during the summer rainy season can mean humid queuing conditions and crowded galleries during school holidays. Spring and autumn bring milder, drier air that makes walking to and from the museum, and combining it with a stroll around nearby Swan Lake, more comfortable.

Spring (mid-March to late April) and autumn (mid-September to late October) are the most comfortable times to visit Hefei and the museum, thanks to mild temperatures and lower humidity than summer. Since the museum is indoors, it also works well as a rainy-day or high-summer activity when outdoor sightseeing in Hefei becomes uncomfortable. Anhui Museum was founded on November 14, 1956, as one of the earliest model museums in China. In September 1958 Mao Zedong personally inspected the museum and used the visit to encourage every province to build an institution that would teach people about their own history. The original Luyang building, constructed in Soviet-influenced style, was designated a national-level protected site in 2013. Decades later, a new Shushan-district building was constructed in a style echoing Huizhou vernacular architecture, and it opened to the public on September 29, 2011, with a permanent Anhui Civilization History exhibition plus several special-topic galleries, effectively giving the museum two campuses today.

As Anhui's principal repository of cultural heritage, the museum plays a central role in preserving and interpreting the province's layered history, from Shang- and Zhou-era bronzes unearthed at sites such as Shouxian and Lu'an, to the artistic traditions of the Xin'an (Huizhou) school of painting and calligraphy. Its collection embodies the meeting of Central Plain, Wu-Yue, Chu and Qunshu cultural influences that historically shaped Anhui. The museum is also a showcase for Huizhou craftsmanship, including woodcarving, Xuan paper and ink production, and a full-scale relocated Huizhou residence, making it a reference point for scholars and visitors interested in the region's distinct architectural and artistic identity.

The Shushan-branch museum at 87 Huaining Road is reachable by Hefei Metro Line 2, alighting at Museum Station. Multiple bus routes also serve the area: buses 30, 114, 126, 127, 133, 136 or 525 to Chenghuangmiao Station followed by a short walk south; buses 17, 122, 126, 133, 162 or 709 to Sanxiaokou Station with a roughly 100-meter walk north; bus 13 to Qihuailukou Station with a 500-meter walk south; or bus 129 to Hefei Sports Center Station with a 600-meter walk north. Taxis and ride-hailing are straightforward from central Hefei, and the museum is roughly a 30-45 minute drive from Hefei Xinqiao International Airport.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with no admission after 4:00 PM; closed on Mondays except public holidays. Hours can vary around holidays, so verify current hours before visiting.

Around the Swan Lake and Shushan district near the museum, hotel restaurants and neighborhood eateries offer a mix of Anhui (Huizhou) cuisine and general Chinese fare, making it easy to combine a museum visit with a meal in the surrounding area.

Swan Lake, a landscaped lake and park, lies about 500 meters north of the museum and is a popular spot for a stroll before or after a visit. Dashu Mountain offers a roughly 30-minute hike with views over the city. Chao Lake, one of China's largest freshwater lakes, is a major natural attraction within reach of Hefei. Sanhe Ancient Town, about 40 km south of the city, is a well-preserved canal town known for its rice wine and old-street architecture, and pairs well with a Hefei museum-and-city itinerary.

The museum is a safe, well-monitored indoor environment typical of major Chinese state museums, with security screening at entry similar to airport-style checks, so arrive a little early and avoid carrying restricted items such as knives, lighters, or large liquid containers. Keep an eye on belongings in busy galleries and around the entrance during peak holiday periods when crowds are largest. As with any museum, avoid touching exhibits and follow staff directions during special exhibitions or group-tour bottlenecks.

Bring a valid photo ID (passport for foreign visitors) since it is required for free admission. A light jacket is useful, as gallery air-conditioning can be strong even in summer.
