History of Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary
Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary, was established in 1962 with the primary goal of preserving the
unique biodiversity of the region. Located in Odisha, the sanctuary spans about 304 square kilometers and is known for its dense forests
and diverse wildlife. Historically, the area was known for its rich wildlife population, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and various bird
species, which attracted attention from conservationists and nature enthusiasts. The sanctuary was designated as a protected area to
provide a safe habitat for these species and to promote ecological balance in the region. Over the years, Ushakothi has become a focal
point for wildlife conservation in Odisha, particularly due to its success in protecting endangered species like the Indian elephant and the
leopard. Today, it is an important site for eco-tourism and wildlife research, contributing to both the conservation and awareness of India’s
natural heritage.
