Their boundaries are well marked and straightforward. In 1979 the Odisha government declared the Simlipal as a Wildlife Sanctuary, in which there were 2,200 square kilometers (850 sq mi) area. Later in 1980, the State Government proposed 303 sq. Km (117 sq mi) of the sanctuary in the form of National Park, in addition to this, the area of National Park increased to 845.70 square kilometers (326.53 square miles) in 1986. . In the year 1994, Government of India declared Siolipal as a biosphere reserve. UNESCO added its National Park to the Biosphere Reserve in May 2009. There are 10,000 people living in 61 villages in the forest. This is the reason why despite being one of India’s 18 biosphere, Similipal has not yet been declared a fully-developed park.
