History of Dhabaleswar Temple

The Dhabaleswar Temple is steeped in legend and devotion to Lord Shiva. It is named “Dhabaleswar” after a miraculous event involving
Lord Shiva. According to the story, a thief, who had stolen a black calf, took refuge in a Shiva temple to escape an angry mob. The crowd,
hearing the calf’s calls, surrounded the temple, convinced that the thief was inside.

In his desperation, the thief prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Responding to his plea, Lord Shiva appeared in the guise of a sannyasi
(holy man) and assured the crowd that no black calf was present. To prove it, he transformed the black calf into a white one. This miracle
cleared the thief of suspicion, and the crowd left. Realizing Lord Shiva’s intervention, the thief repented and vowed to dedicate his life to the
deity.

Since then, Lord Shiva has been worshipped as “Dhabaleswar,” symbolizing the transformation of the black calf to white. The story
