Damoh is a city in the Sagar Division of northeast Madhya Pradesh in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Damoh District.
It has a considerable cattle-market, and a number of small industries, such as weaving, dyeing and pottery-making. The District Of Damoh has an area of 2816 sq. m. Except on the south and east, where the offshoots from the surrounding hills and patches of jungle break up the country, the district consists of open plains of varying degrees of fertility, interspersed with low ranges and isolated heights. The richest tracts lie in the centre.

The district has many places of historical importance. Nohata is one such town of historical importance situated at a distance of 21 km from Damoh. Nohata is situated on the banks of River Gauraya and was a capital of the Chandela Rajputs. A number of temples are there in Nohata.

Damoh District is a district of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. The town of Damoh is the district headquarters. Jatashankar is a famous temple here. Important tourist destinations are Nohleshwar Temple (Nohta), Giri Darshan, the Fort of Singaurgarh, Bandakpur, Nidan Kund, Kundalpur. Industries include oilseed milling, handloom weaving and dyeing, the manufacture of bell-metal vessels and pottery. Narsingarh village is famous for Diamond Cements, a large cement plant.

History of Damoh

This place has long history dating back to ancient times excavated. Stone Age tools found in Singrampur Valley are testimony to the fact that this place was the cradle of human civilization and habitat since millions of years. In more recent times, around 5th century, it was part of mighty grand empire of Guptas of Pataliputra, It was established by the plaques and coins along with various monuments found in the region belonging to the reign of Samudragupta, Chandragupta, and Skandgupta. From 8th century to 12th century some parts of the Damoh district were parts of Chedi Empire ruled by Kalchuri dynasty from capital Tripuri.

The magnificent temple at Nohta is a Living example of the glory of Kalchuries in 10th century. Historical evidences also proves that some regions of the district were under the Chandels of the Jejak -Bhukti. 14th century heralded the era of Muslim rule in the region and stone carving at Salaiya and Batiyagarh mention Khilzi and Tuglaq as Sultans. Later on, the Sultan of Malwa annexed the region in to his fold. In the last quarter of the 15th century, Sangram Shah of Gond dynasty annexed the region into its dynamic and mighty empire consisting of 52 forts.

It was the era of peace and prosperity for the region. In Singrampur, Rani Durgawati attained martyrdom battling against the might of Mughal Empire represented by its General Asaf Khan along with his army. Her zeal to retain integrity and sovereignty of a kingdom is unparallel in world history. Bundelas entered in to the region for a brief span after which Marathas took over the reigns in 1732 and remains The ruler uptill Britishers annexed Marathas kingdom after the death of Peshwa in 1888.

In the struggle for freedom from Brithishers, Damoh kept pace with national devotions and under the able leaderships of Thakur Kishore Singh of Hindoria, Raja Devi Singh of Singrampur, Pancham Singh of Karijog, Gangadhar Rao, Raghunath Rao, Mejban singh, Govind Rao, and some others fought against the British rule in its rebellion in 1857. According to legends Damoh got its name from the name of the Queen of Narvar Rani Damyanti, wife of Raja Nal.

JATASHANKAR:

Nohleshwar Temple (Nohta):

This Shiv Temple is about 1 K.M. away from Nohta village. Shiv is also known as ‘Mahadev’ and ‘Nohleshwar’. It was built around 950-1000 A.D. According to some people the credit of building this temple goes to the queen of Kalchury King Avni Varma of Chalukya Vansha. The Shiv temple of Nohta is the most important representation or the design of the architecture of Kalchury style of temple buildings of the 10th Century. It is built on a high platform. It’s parts are - ‘Panch rath’, ‘Garbhgrih’, ‘Amtral’, ‘Mandap’ and ‘Mukh Mandap’.

Giri Darshan:

Situated on the High way from Damoh to Jabalpur 5 kms. from Jabera and 7 km. from Sigrampur toward Damoh on a green hill in the jungle a beautiful double storeyed rest house cum watch tower was built by the Forest Dept. It is a beautiful piece of Architecture. From the main road a narrow path along of the bank of a tank reaches this rest house. The reservation to stay in the rest house can be made at DFO office at Damoh. The beautiful sight of the roads of the small hills and the fascinating view of the sunrise and the sunset thrills the visitors. This view can be seen from the terrace of the rest house. The wild animals also can be seen at night.

The Fort of Singaurgarh :

About 6 km. away from Sigrampur the ruins of a fort of an historical importance can be found. There was civilization here in older times. King Vane Basore had built a big and strong fort and the Gawe kings ruled over here for a long time. At the end of the 15th century Gaund king Dalpati Shah with her queen Durgawati lived here. After his death queen Durgawati fought with Asaf Ali the chief of the army of Mughal king Akbar. There is also a lake here, which is full of lotus flowers. This is an ideal picnic spot.

Nidan Kund:

Almost 1/2 km. from the Bhainsaghat Rest House towards the Bhainsa village, a road goes to this waterfall. 1 km. from the main road a stream between the high black rocks flows down from more than 100 ft’s hight. This is called Nidan Kund. During the months of July and August there is much water in the stream so the sight of this fall from the front is breath taking. It becomes a perfect picnic spot in September and October as water in the stream is reduced. There are steps like formation on the black rocks against the flow of the stream so it makes a beautiful sight when the water flows down over these rocks.

Nazara:

3 km. from Bhainsa village towards Kalumar on W.B.M. road there is road leading to the spot called “Nazara”. This place has been developed as a platform on the top of the mountain giving a breath taking overview of the Rani Durgawati Abhyaran. The beautiful sight of the thick forest can be enjoyed from here. The caves of the wild animals on the hills can also be seen. Wild animals are also spotted roaming around in the forest.

Sad-Bhawna Shikhar:

It is the highest point of the Vidhyachal mountain ranges. On Bhainsa - Kalumar road there cuts a forest road which is almost 6 kms. Long. A Breathtaking view of the area around it can be seen from here. This peak is 2467 ft. high from the sea level. The twinkling light of Jabalpur city can be seen from here at clear nights. It is not very easy to climb this peak so it is convenient to use a jeep or any other 4 wheeler.
