A domed building on a podium in the middle of the lake inside, the campus is known as the Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan which houses the Vidhan Sabha and the legislature office. On the two sides of the Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan are other two buildings which are built magnificently. The two buildings on the either side of the domed building are linked by hanging corridors. Sardar Bhavan and Narmada Bhavan are the name of the two buildings. The Sardar Bhavan houses the several departments of State Secretariat are placed in the Sardar Bhavan and Narmada Bhavan houses the offices of the Head of the Departments.

The complex is known for its magnificent buildings. Located in the heart of the city in Sector 10, the Capital Complex comprises buildings like the Legislature and government offices. The Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan is a beautiful dome-shaped building that sits pretty on a high podium right in the center of a circular lake and houses the legislature offices and the Vidhan Sabha.

There are two multi-storeyed modern buildings which are linked to the Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan by hanging corridors. History of Capital Complex

In 1960, when the old Mumbai State was bifurcated into the present States of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Mumbai city fell to the share of Maharastra. It was then decided to build and entirely new capital for Gujarat.

Gandhinagar, Gujarat’s new capital city, rises on the west bank of the Sabarmati river, about 32 kms. north east of Ahmedabad, the commercial and cultural heart of Gujarat. Gandhinagar presents the spacious, well-organized look of an architecturally integrated city.

Located near Gandhinagar, on the Sabarmati river back, is Pethapur village, only 7 kms from the capital. Once famous for its colourful `Bandhani’ saris, the village also used to export wooden printing blocks to Singapore. The wooden blocks, with exquisite patterns carved on them, are used for the hand-printing of cloth. They are still in demand among the people. Some of the printing centres in India are Ahmedabad, Bombay, Jetpur and Rajkot. The Pethapur craftsmen are mainly Gujjar Suthars.

Adalaj Step Well:
Adalaj Step Well, the architectural marvel, is situated about 15 kms from the capital on the National Highway. This well is famous for its unique architecture with a huge artistic edifice and a flight of steps that enables one to reach the water, whatever be its level. Adalaj:
Adalaj is situated about 17 kms. north of Ahmedabad. The baoli or step-well at Adalaj Vav is one of the finest step well in India. Queen Rudabai built this well in 1499 to provide the traveller with a cool and pleasant refuge from the summer heat. A long flight of steps descends to the water. It has three entrances leading to a huge platform that rests on 16 pillars, with corners marked by shrines. Ornately carved pillars and cross beams create open spaces and four storey that are quite striking. The octagonal well is five storey deep. The baoli is decorated with exquisite stone carvings, subjects range from eroticism to buttermilk.

Dada Hari Vav:
Dada Hari Vav was built in 1499 by a woman of Sultan Begara’s harem. This wav has steps to lower platforms, terminating at a small, octagonal well. The depths are cool, even on a hottest day. Neglected and often borne dry, it is a fascinating place. The best time to visit and photograph the well is between 10 to 11 AM (earlier in the summers Adalaj Vav, Ahmedabad and later in the winters), at other times the sun does not penetrate to the various levels.

About thousand species of birds like flamingoes and other water birds migrate in the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary during winter. Thol wildlife sanctuary:
The circumference of this jungle is 7sq. km and it is a home of nature and beauty filled in with variety of wildfowl, flamingos, gray pelicans, black ibis and wetland birds. The best seasons are the month of October to March.
