History of Houses of Goa: Museum Alto-Torda Goa
The Houses of Goa Museum was conceptualised and built in 1997 by renowned Goan architect Gerard da Cunha. Construction began around 2003–04 after his exhibition “Houses of Goa” travelled to Lisbon, Porto, Mumbai, and Delhi. The building is a triangular ship-like structure made of laterite stone (chira stone), standing on three massive 2,500 kg grinding mills (ragi mills) from Karnataka that serve as structural pillars. It was built to document Goa’s vanishing architectural heritage — da Cunha collected materials from demolished houses for years.
Things to do at Houses of Goa: Museum Alto-Torda Goa
Explore three floors via a spiral staircase. View Mario Miranda sketches depicting Goan history from 1300 BC. See salvaged architectural elements: doors, windows, railings, tiles, furniture, and altars. Visit the open auditorium on the top floor with balcãos and Tulsi Vrindavans. Shop for books and cards at the ground-floor store. Relax at the on-site cafe.
Things to visit & highlights
The ship-shaped building itself — a masterpiece of contemporary Goan architecture. Mario Miranda’s artwork throughout. The massive ragi mills supporting the structure. The collection of salvaged Goan house elements. Rare 16th–17th century tiles from Europe. The panoramic views from the top floor.
Climate & weather
Goa has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons. Winter (November–February) is the peak tourist season: temperatures range from 20°C to 32°C with low humidity, clear skies, and calm seas — ideal for all outdoor activities. Summer (March–May) is hot and humid with temperatures reaching 35°C; beaches are less crowded but midday heat can be intense. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rainfall, rough seas, and high humidity; many beach shacks close, but the landscape is lush and green, and it is the quietest time for those seeking solitude.

Photography rules vary — some museums prohibit all photography, others allow photography without flash. Check signage at the entrance. Do not touch exhibits.
