Lijiang Old Town, also known as Dayan, is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic town in northwestern Yunnan and the cultural heart of the Naxi ethnic minority. Built around a network of canals fed by the Yuquan spring and Black Dragon Pool, its cobbled lanes, timber courtyard houses and stone bridges have survived largely intact since the Song and Yuan dynasties, escaping the rigid grid layout of most traditional Chinese cities in favor of an organic street pattern shaped by the flowing water. Because the ruling Mu clan's surname character resembles an enclosed 'mu' meaning to wall in, tradition holds that the town was never enclosed by a defensive wall, contributing to its unusually open, organic layout. Lijiang prospered as a key stop on the Tea Horse Road trade route between Yunnan and Tibet. The town was significantly damaged by a major earthquake in 1996 but was carefully restored, and gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997.

Individual paid sights inside the town, such as the Mu Family Mansion or Black Dragon Pool Park, charge separate admission, typically in the range of roughly ¥40-60 each. A full day allows a good first look at Lijiang Old Town's main squares, the Mu Family Mansion and Black Dragon Pool Park, but most visitors spend two to three nights, using the town as a base for day trips to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge or the quieter villages of Shuhe and Baisha nearby. Evenings are worth budgeting extra time for, given the town's active nightlife scene around Sifang Square.

Lijiang Old Town has an enormous range of guesthouses and boutique hotels within restored Naxi courtyard buildings, from simple budget rooms to high-end designer inns, concentrated along the canal-side lanes. Because the old town can be noisy at night near its bar streets, travelers seeking quiet often choose accommodation in the adjacent, calmer villages of Shuhe or Baisha, both a short taxi ride away, or in the newer Lijiang city area for more standard hotel options.

Naxi specialties available throughout the old town include baba, a layered flatbread often filled with meat or vegetables, Lijiang grilled fish from local rivers, and dishes making use of yak meat and mountain mushrooms from the surrounding highlands. Sifang Square and the streets around it have the densest concentration of restaurants, ranging from casual noodle shops to sit-down establishments serving Naxi banquet-style meals. The old town's bar streets near the main canals are lively into the night, offering a livelier dining and drinking scene than most other Yunnan old towns.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with its cable cars and Blue Moon Valley, lies about 30-40 minutes north and is the area's most prominent natural landmark. Baisha and Shuhe, two smaller, quieter historic villages, offer a calmer alternative to the busier Dayan old town center. Black Dragon Pool Park sits just at the old town's edge. Travelers with more time often continue from Lijiang toward Tiger Leaping Gorge or Shangri-La as part of a broader northwestern Yunnan route.

Lijiang Sanyi Airport, roughly 25-30 km from the old town, and Lijiang's high-speed railway station, a similar distance away, are the main gateways for reaching the wider region. Both are connected to the old town by taxi, airport shuttle bus and ride-hailing apps, generally taking 20-30 minutes. Within the old town itself, walking is the only way to get around, since it is a pedestrianized historic district.

Lijiang Old Town is generally safe, though its size and maze-like lanes mean it's easy to get turned around, so noting a few landmark reference points or using offline maps is helpful. As with other popular tourist towns, watch for overpriced goods, aggressive touts, or unlicensed tour and horse-riding operators near Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and agree on prices in advance. The old town's nightlife area can get loud and crowded on weekends and holidays, so choose accommodation accordingly if you prefer quiet.

Use Lijiang as a base for excursions rather than trying to see Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge in a single rushed day.
