Danxia Mountain, in Shaoguan in northern Guangdong, is the type locality for 'Danxia landform,' the striking red sandstone terrain of steep cliffs, isolated pillars, and gorges carved by millions of years of erosion. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as part of the China Danxia World Heritage Site, it is renowned for dramatic red-rock scenery reflected in the winding Jinjiang River, along with unusual rock formations such as Yangyuan Rock and Yinyuan Rock. It ranks among Guangdong's most visually distinctive natural attractions and a benchmark site for geologists worldwide, drawing hikers, photographers, and researchers alike to its cliffside trails and river valleys.

Danxia Mountain lies in Renhua County, part of Shaoguan prefecture in the far north of Guangdong province, roughly 250 to 280 kilometers north of Guangzhou. The scenic area covers a substantial stretch of red sandstone hills and valleys along the Jinjiang River, divided into several sub-areas including the Yangyuan Rock zone and the Zhanglao Peak area.

Shaoguan has a humid subtropical climate, somewhat cooler than the Pearl River Delta due to its inland, higher-elevation setting, with hot, humid summers (June to August) often over 30°C and mild, occasionally chilly winters (December to February) that can dip close to freezing at higher points. Spring and early summer bring the heaviest rainfall.

Danxia Mountain has been known and named in Chinese geological and cultural literature since at least the Ming dynasty, and its distinctive red sandstone terrain became the scientific reference point for what geologists now call 'Danxia landform' worldwide, a term derived from the mountain's own name. In 2010, UNESCO inscribed Danxia Mountain together with five other sites across China as the China Danxia World Heritage property, recognizing the formation as an outstanding example of this landscape type.

Beyond its geological importance, Danxia Mountain holds a place in regional folklore and has long attracted Daoist and Buddhist religious activity, with temples and shrines scattered through the scenic area. The scenic area is typically open daily, generally from around 7:00 or 8:00 am until early evening, though hours can vary between sub-areas and seasons. Boat cruise and cable car schedules often run on a more limited daytime window, so visitors should confirm current timings on the official Danxia Mountain scenic area site before traveling.

Entry to the Danxia Mountain scenic area typically involves a general admission fee, with boat cruises, cable cars, and some sub-zones charging additional fees. As a major, heavily promoted UNESCO site, pricing is reviewed periodically, so current rates should be confirmed on the official booking channel rather than relying on older published figures.

A full day is generally recommended to see the main areas properly, including Yangyuan Rock and a river cruise; visitors wanting to explore multiple sub-areas or hike more extensively may prefer two days with an overnight stay near the park.

There are hotels and guesthouses both within Shaoguan city and closer to the scenic area entrance in Renhua County, ranging from simple local inns to mid-range hotels, making an overnight stay convenient for a more relaxed two-day visit rather than a rushed day trip from Guangzhou.

Local restaurants near the scenic area and in Renhua town serve Hakka and northern Guangdong-style Cantonese dishes, often featuring local mountain vegetables, freshwater fish, and rustic hotpot-style meals distinct from Pearl River Delta cuisine. Simple noodle and snack stalls are available near the main entrances.

Nanhua Temple, an important Chan (Zen) Buddhist site associated with the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, lies within Shaoguan prefecture and is a popular pairing with a Danxia Mountain visit. The wider Shaoguan area also has other natural scenic spots for visitors extending their stay in northern Guangdong.

Shaoguan railway station, on the high-speed Beijing-Guangzhou corridor, is the main transport gateway, with local buses and taxis covering the remaining distance to the scenic area entrances. Renting a car or joining an organized tour from Guangzhou is also common for visitors wanting flexibility.

Trails involve steep steps and can be slippery in rain, so proper footwear is essential, and visitors should stay on marked paths near cliff edges. Carry water and sun protection given the exposed rock terrain, and check weather conditions before boat cruises, which may be suspended in poor conditions.
