Hulishan Fortress is a late-Qing dynasty coastal defence fort perched on a headland at the southern tip of Xiamen Island, built in 1891 to guard the harbour approach with modern artillery imported from Germany. Its centrepiece is a colossal Krupp-manufactured cannon, recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest extant coastal defence cannon of its kind, weighing around 60 tonnes with a barrel stretching over 13 metres. Alongside the giant gun, the fort preserves granite ramparts, ammunition tunnels, and a small military museum, making it a compact but vivid stop for understanding China's late-imperial efforts to modernise its coastal defences.

The fortress sits on a rocky promontory on the southeastern coast of Xiamen Island, close to Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University, overlooking the strait toward Kinmen.

Xiamen's subtropical maritime climate brings hot, humid summers, mild winters, and typhoon risk from roughly July to September, with strong sea winds common at this exposed coastal site.

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the open ramparts, while a visit in early morning or late afternoon in summer helps avoid the strongest midday heat and sun exposure on the exposed gun platform.

Built in 1891 under the Qing dynasty as part of a wider effort to modernise China's coastal defences after repeated confrontations with foreign naval powers, the fort was equipped with German Krupp artillery representing the most advanced military technology of the era. It saw active use into the 20th century and has since been preserved as a rare, largely intact example of a late-Qing coastal battery.

The fortress stands as a physical record of the Qing dynasty's Self-Strengthening Movement, when China sought to adopt Western military technology to resist foreign incursion, and its surviving Krupp cannon is a nationally recognised artefact of that era. It is also a popular site for demonstrations of traditional Chinese martial arts and cannon-firing re-enactments staged for visitors.

Entry is typically ticketed at a modest, budget-friendly rate for a Xiamen city attraction; prices should be confirmed on official Xiamen tourism listings since rates can change.

One to two hours is generally enough to see the Krupp cannon, the tunnels, and the small museum at a relaxed pace; allow extra time if you catch the daily cannon-firing performance or linger over the coastal views toward Gulangyu.

As the fortress sits within Xiamen Island's southern district, visitors typically stay in central Xiamen, which offers hotels across all budgets within easy reach of the fort, Nanputuo Temple, and the university area.

The nearby streets around Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University have a good range of casual restaurants and snack stalls serving Minnan specialities such as oyster omelette and peanut soup, convenient for combining with a fortress visit.

Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University are both within easy walking or short driving distance, making it simple to combine all three into a single half-day itinerary in southern Xiamen.

Local Xiamen city buses and ride-hailing services connect the fortress to the wider city, with Xiamen's BRT and railway station reachable within a short taxi ride.

Some tunnel and stairway areas are uneven underfoot, so watch your step, and be mindful of crowds and noise during the scheduled cannon-firing performance.

Bring sun protection and water for the exposed outdoor gun platform, comfortable shoes for uneven fortification surfaces, and a camera for the cannon and coastal views.
