Orange Beach

State: Alabama. Type: beach town in Baldwin County on the Gulf of Mexico, immediately east of Gulf Shores. Incorporated August 1, 1984. 2020 census population: 8,095. Known for The Wharf entertainment district and for sharing Alabama's roughly 32-mile beach stretch with Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan.

Orange Beach occupies the easternmost slice of Alabama's Gulf Coast, sitting on Perdido Key along the Gulf of Mexico and bordering the Florida state line. Though its roots go back to a small mid-19th-century settlement, the city didn't formally incorporate until 1984, and it has grown quickly since, with its population rising sharply between 1990 and 2020. Like neighboring Gulf Shores, Orange Beach's economy revolves around its beaches, but it has also built out a distinct identity around deep-sea fishing charters, marina-based dining and entertainment at The Wharf, and a busy calendar of watersports. The city sits close enough to Gulf Shores that many visitors treat the two as a single destination, moving freely between beaches, restaurants and attractions in both. Orange Beach markets itself heavily on its charter fishing fleet and boating culture, alongside the same soft, white sand that defines this stretch of coastline.

Orange Beach sits in Baldwin County in far southern Alabama, bordered by Perdido Key, Florida to the east and Gulf Shores to the west, with the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Wolf Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway to the north. The city covers just under 16 square miles of land and water and is reachable via Perdido Beach Boulevard along the coast.

Orange Beach shares Gulf Shores' humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters comparable to nearby Pensacola, Florida. Average annual rainfall is a little over 63 inches. Gulf water temperatures range from around the low 60s Fahrenheit in winter up to the mid-80s in summer. As with the rest of the Alabama coast, hurricane season (June through November) brings the greatest risk of storm disruption.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable combination of warm weather and manageable crowds, similar to Gulf Shores next door. Summer remains the peak season for families due to school schedules, despite higher heat, humidity and hurricane risk. Anglers chasing specific seasonal fish, such as red snapper, should check current season dates before planning a trip, since these are set annually and can change.

Orange Beach traces its origins to a small settlement established in the area in the mid-1860s, well before the modern tourism industry took hold along this coastline. For more than a century it remained a sparsely populated fishing and farming community. The city was not formally incorporated until August 1, 1984, relatively late compared to many other Alabama coastal towns. Since then, growth has been rapid: the population rose from roughly 2,250 residents in 1990 to over 8,000 by the 2020 census. Much of that growth mirrors the broader development of Alabama's Gulf Coast as a vacation destination from the late 20th century onward, with condominium towers, marinas and entertainment districts like The Wharf reshaping what was once a quiet stretch of coast. In 2022, Orange Beach separated from the county school system to establish its own city schools, a marker of the community's continued shift toward a larger, more permanent population rather than a purely seasonal one.

Fishing is a signature activity here, with a large charter fleet offering deep-sea, inshore and specialty trips; the city's marinas are geared toward both serious anglers and casual visitors. Dolphin-watching cruises are popular and widely available from the marinas. The Wharf entertainment district combines shopping, dining, a large Ferris wheel and a live-event amphitheater for evening entertainment. Gulf State Park's Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail network extends into the Orange Beach area, offering biking and hiking through coastal habitats. Beachgoing, parasailing, and kayak or paddleboard rentals round out the typical visitor itinerary, and the long-running Flora-Bama complex on the Florida state line offers a distinctly Gulf Coast bar-and-live-music experience.

The Wharf is the area's major mixed-use attraction, with dozens of shops and restaurants, a marina, and a large Ferris wheel as its visual landmark. The Orange Beach Welcome Center serves as an information hub for the wider Gulf Shores-Orange Beach area. Gulf State Park's trail system reaches into Orange Beach for hikers and cyclists. The Flora-Bama Lounge, a long-running beach bar on the Alabama-Florida line, is as much a local landmark as it is a place to eat and drink.

The closest general-aviation airport is Gulf Shores International Airport/Jack Edwards Field, roughly nine miles (about 15 minutes) away. For scheduled commercial flights, Pensacola International Airport in Florida is the nearest major option, generally under an hour's drive, with Mobile Regional Airport a further option for those coming from the northwest. Most visitors then rely on a rental car, since Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are spread along the coast without a comprehensive public transit network.

The Orange Beach Welcome Center is open daily; as of research its hours were 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual attractions such as The Wharf, fishing charters and Gulf State Park facilities each keep their own hours, which can vary seasonally, so check specific venues before visiting.

Public beach access is generally free in Orange Beach, though parking fees may apply at certain lots. The Wharf's shops and restaurants operate on normal retail and dining pricing rather than an admission fee, though the Ferris wheel and some attractions inside The Wharf charge separately. Fishing charters and watersports rentals are priced individually by the operator.

Most visitors stay multiple days to make full use of the beach, fishing charters and The Wharf, though a day trip focused on one activity, such as a charter fishing trip or an evening at The Wharf, is also common for those staying in nearby Gulf Shores or Pensacola.

Orange Beach has a large stock of beachfront condominium towers and vacation rental homes, which make up the bulk of overnight stays, alongside a smaller number of traditional hotels concentrated around The Wharf and along the main coastal road. Rates and availability shift heavily with the season, peaking in summer and around major holidays.

Seafood dominates the local dining scene, with waterfront restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway and marinas serving fresh Gulf catch. The Wharf concentrates a wide range of dining options from casual sandwich counters to more upscale restaurants. The Flora-Bama complex, straddling the Alabama-Florida line, adds a mix of casual bar food and a laid-back, live-music atmosphere that's become a Gulf Coast institution in its own right.

Gulf Shores sits directly to the west and shares much of the same beach and attractions ecosystem. Perdido Key and Pensacola, Florida, are a short drive east for visitors wanting to extend their trip across the state line. Gulf State Park's trails and nature center are also easily reached from Orange Beach.

Pensacola International Airport is the nearest airport with significant scheduled commercial service, roughly an hour's drive away; Gulf Shores International Airport/Jack Edwards Field is much closer but has more limited service. The Baldwin Regional Area Transit System provides some public transit in the wider county, though a personal or rental vehicle remains the most practical way to get around Orange Beach itself.

As with Gulf Shores, check the posted color-coded beach warning flags before swimming, since rip currents and rough surf can develop quickly on this coastline; double red flags mean swimming is prohibited. Boating and fishing visitors should be mindful of posted no-wake zones near marinas and residential canals. Hurricane season (June-November) calls for monitoring forecasts and following any local evacuation guidance.

Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and water are essential for beach and boat days alike. If you're heading out on a fishing charter, a light jacket for the boat ride and non-slip shoes are worth packing. Cash or a card for parking fees at some beach access points and marinas is also handy.

Booking condos or hotel rooms well ahead of summer weekends is recommended, since Orange Beach's lodging inventory fills up during peak season. Renting a car is close to necessary given the area's spread-out layout and limited public transit. If you want a fishing charter or dolphin cruise, book in advance, especially in summer, since popular boats can sell out. Pairing an Orange Beach stay with a day trip into Gulf Shores, or across the state line to Pensacola, is a common way to vary a longer visit.
