1. Golden Temple
Timings: 7.00 am
Amritsar has three main tourist attractions. The Harmandir Sahib (also Darbar Sahib) referred to as the “Golden Temple” is a prominent Sikh Gurdwara located less than a couple of miles from the Amritsar railway station. There are four doors to get into the Harmandir Sahib, which symbolizes the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions. Try to reach there early morning as it gets pretty crowded by noon. The temple is surrounded by a lake that reflects the gold-covered upper floors of Gurdwara when the lights are on.
2. Durgiana Temple
Timings: 9.00
Durgiana Temple is one of the top Hindu shrines in Amritsar that offer a glimpse into the city’s religious heritage. Located in the middle of a lake, the temple’s stunning architecture bears a striking resemblance to the Golden Temple. Also known as Lakshmi Narayan Temple, this 16th-century shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga features a pair of intricately carved silver doors.
3. Jallianwala Bagh
Timings: 11.00
Next is Jalliyanwala Bagh which takes about an hour to visit. It is a public garden and a memorial that commemorates the massacre by British occupying forces of peaceful celebrators on the occasion of the Punjabi New Year on April 13, 1919, in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The British sources placed the fatalities at 379, with 1100 wounded. Civil Surgeon Dr. Smith indicated that there were 1,526 casualties. The true figures for fatalities are unknown but are likely to be many times higher than the official figure of 379.
4. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum
Timings: 12.00 pm
Just a minute away from the Jallianwala Bagh is the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Palace which was converted into a museum the year Amritsar celebrated 400 years of existence. The palace was the king’s erstwhile summer home and now has arms, swords and armor, age-old currencies, artifacts, paintings, and belongings of the king. After you visit the Museum, you’ll have to go back to Jallianwala Bagh in order to proceed towards Wagah Border.
5. Wagah Border
Timings: 02.00
Right outside the Jallianwala Bagh, bus and car services offer rides all the way to the Wagah Border. While there are options for booking a ride online, it’s better to book one on the spot as you can negotiate for either the car or bus fare. The famous Wagah Border parade starts at 5 pm and lasts for an hour but if you want to find a seat and watch the parade live, it is advisable to reach by 2 pm. Keep in mind that you’re allowed to carry just basic essentials like sunglasses, a water bottle, and your wallet to the border area. If you want to interact with the soldiers and click pictures near the gates, wait till the area is mostly vacated.
6. Gobindgarh Fort
Timings: 04.00 pm
Gobindgarh Fort is not just a historical structure; it also serves as a live heritage museum. Spend some time inside this 18th-century majestic fort to know more about its glorious history and enjoy its many attractions.
7. Ram Tirath Ashram
Timings: 06.00 pm
Sri Ram Tirath Ashram is believed to be the spot where sage Valmiki gave shelter to Sita after Lord Ram had abandoned her. Legend has it that she later gave birth to her twin sons, Luv and Kush, at this very place. Also known as Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Sthal, the main attraction of the ashram is a stunning gold-plated statue of Valmiki weighing 800 kilograms.
8.Khair-ud-Din Mosque
Timings: 08.00 pm
Another one of the admired religious places in Amritsar is the Khair-ad-Din Mosque. The beautiful mosque is situated in the Hall Bazaar and was built by Muhammad Khairuddin in 1876. The visit can be completed in under half an hour. This is one of the places on our early morning bicycle tour itinerary.

Amritsar is the home of the most beautiful Gurudwara, the Golden Temple. Amritsar has one of the most historically touching places, the Jalliyanwala bagh, and Amritsar is the place for the best Punjabi dhabas. But what makes a trip to Amritsar a must is the Attari Border. Amritsar is located in northern Punjab, only 28 km away from the Wagah Border. It is the second-largest city in Punjab and it’s one of the most popular travel destinations in North India. The best time to visit Amritsar depends mainly on the weather condition in Amritsar. Like the rest of northwestern India, the city braves a semi-arid climate throughout the year. Amritsar temperature is usually extreme in both the summer and winter seasons. During the monsoon season, the Amritsar climate is generally cloudy and humid.
