Museum is a must visit place for everyone and here the heritage and history of the state and the country are well-evident. This museum contains various historic documents and items which make the visitor relive the rich historic past of the country vividly.

The beautiful building in which the Gandhi Museum is now located has an historical background. The building was known as ’ Tamukkam Bungalow ’ among the local people. The term ’ Tamakkumu’ or ’ Tamagamu’ is a telugu word meaning a ‘summer house’ or a building having a high roof supported by pillars without walls. The drawing room of the Tamukkam Bungalow which is constructed on the top of a square mound of earth about 5 metres high with a masonry dome of about 7 metres diameter was a great bulding. It is accepted as a building probably constructed by the Nayak Queen Rani Mangammal, as evidenced by a letter written to her in 1700AD.

History

The Gandhi Memorial Museum is the place where various items linked to the freedom movement are showcased for the visitors. The museum arranges for a special exhibition called ‘India Fights for Freedom’. In this special exhibition all the items, letters, weapons and the personal items of Gandhiji are displayed.

The exhibition is not only about the freedom movement of India but also about our tradition and history like the textile, the village and the cottage industries. The museum is divided into various floors according to its themes and essence. The first floor is allotted for the personal belongings of Gandhiji. The hall is named as the ‘the Hall of Relics’.

Khadi and the other hand woven fabrics and the methods of their production are kept on display for the tourists. The working of the spinning machine and the weaving procedures are demonstrated to the visitors. The pictures of the freedom movement, the picture of the struggling Indians, the grandeur of the English East India Company decorate the walls of the museum.

To the southern part of the building there is an open-air theatre which can accommodate about 8,000 audiences. Various cultural programs, film shows, public meetings are arranged in this auditorium. The library hosts 18,000 volumes of books. Various literatures and the letters of Gandhiji and 62 micro-films are the most valuable part of the museum.

The Temple Towers or The Gopurams
The temple has 12 temple towers also known as the Gopurams. The outer towers of the temple work as landmarks of Madurai.

Gopura
Gopuras rise to a height of more than 50m. These towering gateways indicate the entrance to the temple complex at the four cardinal points, while lesser gopuras lead to the sanctums of the main dieties.

.Stucco Work :After every 12 years, the figures of deities on the tower are reconditioned, repainted and ritually reconsecrated.

Ashta Shakthi Mandapam  :A visitor enters this Mandapam through the eastern gateway, .It was built by Thirumalai Nayakar’s wives Rudrapathi Ammal and Tholimamai. In this hall food was once distributed to the devotees who came from far off places. Next to this hall is the Meenakshi Nayaka Mandapa, a spacious columned hall used for shops and stores. This hall has a votive lamp-holder with 1,008 lamps, which are lit on festive occasions and present a spectacular sight. The sculptures on the pillars here relate some of Lord Shiva’s Thiruvilayadals (miracles) and also the story of Meenakshi’s birth and her life as the princess of Madurai.

Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapam    :This big hall is adjacent to Ashta Shakthi Mandapam, consisting of 110 pillars carrying the figures of a peculiar animal with a lion’s body , and an elephant’s head called Yalli.

The Thousand Pillar Mandapam:It is the ‘wonder of the palace’. Actually the number of  pillars count to 985 beautifully decorated columns. Each pillar is sculptured and is a monument of the Dravidan sculpture. There is a Temple Art Museum in this 1000 pillars hall where you can see icons, photographs, drawings, etc., exhibiting the 1200 years old history.

Vasantha Mandapam:This mandapam was built by Thirumalai Nayakkar. Vasanthosavam - the  Spring festival-is celebrated in this mandapam in Vaikasi . Its pillars contain elaborate sculptures of Shiva, Meenakshi, scenes from their wedding as well as the figures of ten of the Nayak Kings and their consorts. This is also called Pudhu Mandapam.

The nearest railhead is Kodaikanal Road on southern Railways. From Kodaikanal Road, one has to travel 80 kms. (50 miles) by road to reach Kodaikanal. Two-thirds of this motor journey up the hill through the ghats is an exciting experience with the vista and scenery changing at every bend and curve on the mountain road.
