The Balimela Dam is located in the Malkangiri district of Odisha, India, on the Sileru River, which is a tributary of the Godavari River. The Balimela reservoir has an impressive gross storage capacity of 3610 million cubic meters, making it a vital water resource for the region.
This dam was developed as a joint project between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to equally share the waters of the Sileru River at the Balimela site. Odisha undertook the development of a 360 MW hydroelectric power plant (with 6 units of 60 MW each) by diverting water from the Balimela reservoir to the Potteru sub-river basin.
A barrage at Surlikonda was constructed across the Potteru stream to redirect the discharge from the Balimela Power House into two main canals—one on the right side, known as the Tamasha Main Canal, and the other on the left side, known as the Gompakonda Main Canal. These canals are part of the Potteru Irrigation Project, which provides irrigation to the most backward district of Malkangiri, improving the livelihoods of local inhabitants.
