The Bansagar Dam across the Sone River has been constructed at Deolond village in Shahdol district, along the Rewa-Shahdol road, approximately 51.4 km from Rewa. Named “Bansagar” after Bana Bhatt, a 7th-century Sanskrit scholar believed to be from this region, the coordinates are Latitude 24-11-30 N and Longitude 81-17-15 E.
Initially planned as the “Dimba Project” in 1956 by the Central Water Commission, New Delhi, the location was moved to Deolond.
In 1973, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar agreed to share the construction costs in a 2:1:1 ratio and to share 4 MAF of water similarly. Construction began in 1978 with an initial cost of Rs. 91.31 crores, which was later updated to Rs. 1054.96 crores in 1998.
The project serves both irrigation and hydroelectric power generation, with benefits extended to Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, providing irrigation over 2,490 km² in Madhya Pradesh, 1,500 km² in Uttar Pradesh, and 940 km² in Bihar.
