The Machattu Thiruvanikavu Temple is located at Vadakkancherry in Thrissur district, Kerala.The Machattu Mamangam in Kerala is an annual extravaganza which is celebrated with full fervor and is attended by thousands from Kerala. The five day long celebration involves massive crowd, exhilarating entertainment and great pageantry. The main ritual of the celebration takes place on the last day with a heavily decorated Kuthirakolams which is the motifs of the horses being taken out for the procession. It is one of the most famous festivals celebrated here and the temple deity is Kavilamma. Machad Mamangham has its written history of more than 800 years. It is one of the oldest religious, social and cultural festival of Kerala. The shine is dedicated to goddess Bhagavathy in three roles viz. Saraswathy. Lakshmi and Durga.The temple celebrates the famous Machattu Mamangham festival with great pomp and splendor for five days from 13th February to 17th February. Punnamparambu, Thekkumkara and Panangattukara-Kallampara Desams take turns among themselves to lead this festival annually.The annual extravaganza attracting thousands from all over the places is staged at the Machattu. The temple, the centre for attraction is the place where the Machattuvela festival is staged and devotees with great passion and devotion participate.
The main highlight of the festival is the Kuthiravela, where richly decorated motifs of horses are brought ceremoniously to the temple by devotees. Other cultural and art formsare also conducted which includes Chendamelam and elephant pageants. As myth will have it the Goddess Bhagavathy leaves the temple to visit the homes of the devotees all around and accepts the offerings in turn showers blessings on them. The procession also accompanies the elephants dressed up in royal fashion along with the Chendamelam, traditional percussion music making the event a real treat to the visitors.
