Sivasamudram Island
In the Western Ghats of Kodagu district at Talacauvery, River Cauvery emerges and meanders to join the Rivers Harangi, Hemavathi, Lakshmana Thirtha and Kapila creating number of waterfalls. At Shivasamudram also called Bluff or Simsha, this water falls has twin jumps, the Gagana Chukki or the Western falls and the Bara/Bhara Chukki or the Eastern falls.

About Sivasamudram Island
Monsoon season(during the month of July and August makes this waterfall swell to enormous proportion, when the river Kabini floods along with Cauvery creating a waterfall perhaps a thousand feet wide.The Hydro electric power stations is the first of its kind in Asia, in 1902, is still functional. It is been commissioned by the Diwan of Mysore, Sir K Seshadri Iyer. The first town to receive the electricity from this station is Kolar Gold Fields, hence Kolar become the first town in Asia to get hydro electricity.

Sivanasamudram (aka Sivasamudram) is a nice waterfall near Malavalli, Mandya district. Situated in a rocky terrain with traces of vegetation, Its - 160 Kms. From Bangalore / 85 Kms from Mysore The waterfall is around 50meters tall on River Kaveri (Cauvery) and is a beautiful sight, especially during monsoon. Shivanasamudra has India’s first Hydro - Electric Power Station which was set up in 1902. River Cauvery cascades down in two picturesque waterfalls into a 75 Mts. deep Rocky gorge.
As the cascading water hits the rocky surface, a dense mist of vapour emerges to partially envelop the falls, providing a brilliant sight which is reckoned to be unmatched in its beauty. The falls are created when the Cauvery roars down a 75-metre gorge. The river divides around the 700-acre picturesque Shivanasamudra Island. On the one side, it forms the Gaganachukki falls and on the other it rumbles down as the Bharachukki falls.

About Cauvery: The Cauvery, India’s second most sacred river, is sometimes called the Ganges of the South. According to Hindu legend, Vishnumaya, daughter of the god Brahma, was born on earth as the child of a mortal, Kavera Muni. In order to bring beatitude for Kavera Muni, she became a river whose water would purify all sins.
