History of Tiracol Fort

Tiracol Fort was built in the 17th century by Maratha ruler Khem Sawant Bhonsle (Raja of Sawantwadi) as a coastal defence outpost. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1746 under Viceroy Pedro Miguel de Almeida and renamed “Fortaleza da Santíssima Trindade” (Fortress of the Holy Trinity). The Portuguese fortified it with 12 cannons, barracks, and a chapel — St. Anthony’s Church was built inside in the 1760s. In 1954, Indian freedom fighters crossed the river, raised the Indian flag, and declared it “liberated territory” — a Freedom Fighters’ Memorial now stands at the entrance. Goa was liberated in 1961. In 1976, the fort was restored and converted into a heritage hotel, now privately operated.

Things to do at Tiracol Fort

Walk the fort ramparts for panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and Tiracol River. Photograph the pristine coastline and sunset. Visit St. Anthony’s Church (Sunday Mass or annual feast in May). Dine at The Tavern restaurant (Goan, Portuguese, and international cuisine). Stay overnight in one of 7 rooms named after days of the week, decorated in Portuguese-colonial style. Explore Querim Beach. Visit the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial.

Things to visit & highlights

The Freedom Fighters’ Memorial at the entrance, St. Anthony’s Church (1760s), the panoramic sea-and-river views from the ramparts, and the heritage hotel interiors (for guests and diners).

Climate & weather

Goa has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons. Winter (November–February) is the peak tourist season: temperatures range from 20°C to 32°C with low humidity, clear skies, and calm seas — ideal for all outdoor activities. Summer (March–May) is hot and humid with temperatures reaching 35°C; beaches are less crowded but midday heat can be intense. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rainfall, rough seas, and high humidity; many beach shacks close, but the landscape is lush and green, and it is the quietest time for those seeking solitude.
