History of Reis Magos Fort
The site was originally a military outpost under the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur (around 1493). The Portuguese built the first version in 1551 under Viceroy Afonso de Noronha to defend the Mandovi River estuary and protect Old Goa. It was extensively rebuilt between 1703 and 1707. The fort successfully defended against Maratha attacks in 1739 with its 33 cannons. It was briefly occupied by the British from 1798 to 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. It served as a prison until 1993. A major restoration by INTACH, the Goa Government, and the Helen Hamlyn Trust (2008–2012) reopened it on 5 June 2012 as a cultural centre. The name “Reis Magos” means “Three Wise Men” in Portuguese.

Climate & weather
Goa has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons. Winter (November–February) is the peak tourist season: temperatures range from 20°C to 32°C with low humidity, clear skies, and calm seas — ideal for all outdoor activities. Summer (March–May) is hot and humid with temperatures reaching 35°C; beaches are less crowded but midday heat can be intense. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rainfall, rough seas, and high humidity; many beach shacks close, but the landscape is lush and green, and it is the quietest time for those seeking solitude.
