Travel Rules or Entry Requirements for Spain
Short Stay Rules
Spain follows the Schengen travel rules for short visits. Many non-European Union travelers can stay in Spain for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Travelers from countries that require a visa must apply for a Schengen visa before travel. If you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you usually need a national visa or residence permit based on the purpose of your stay.
Documents You May Need at Entry
When entering Spain, you may be asked to show a valid passport or travel document, a visa if required, proof of the purpose of your visit, proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, proof of enough money for your stay, and confirmation that you are not banned from entering the Schengen area.
Passport Validity Rules
Your passport should usually be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area. It should also normally have been issued within the last 10 years.
Proof of Purpose of Visit
Spanish border authorities may ask why you are visiting. If you are traveling as a tourist, you may need to show hotel reservations, a tour booking, or an invitation letter if you are staying with family or friends.
Proof of Accommodation
You may be asked to show where you will stay during your trip. This can be a hotel booking, rental confirmation, or a host invitation with address details.
Return or Onward Travel
Travelers may also be asked to show a return ticket or proof that they will leave Spain after the visit.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Spain may ask travelers to show that they have enough money to support themselves during the trip. A commonly used guideline is around €90 per person per day, with a minimum amount of about €810, though border officials may decide what evidence is acceptable.
Rules for Indian Travelers
If you are traveling on an Indian passport for tourism, you usually need a short-stay Schengen visa to visit Spain. Commonly required documents include a valid passport with at least 2 blank pages, travel medical insurance, flight booking, hotel booking or invitation letter, bank statements, and other financial documents.
Travel Insurance
For visa-required travelers, travel medical insurance is generally required. The insurance should usually cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses.
Current Entry System Update
The European Union Entry/Exit System became operational on 12 October 2025. ETIAS has not started yet and is expected to begin later in 2026. At present, travelers do not need to apply for ETIAS.
Important Tip
Entry rules can depend on your nationality, passport type, and travel purpose. It is always best to check the latest Spain consulate or visa center requirements before booking your trip.
