Mundeshwari Temple is located at Kaimur district in the state of Bihar. It is considered to be the most ancient temple of India. It is an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Shakti and is considered and it is one of the most seasoned Hindu sanctuaries in Bihar. It is also considered the ‘oldest functional’ temple in the world. Its temple built by the stone is on an octagonal plan which is rare. It is the earliest specimen of the Nagara style of temple architecture in Bihar. There is historical evidence that even states that the temple existed during the Saka era when the Gupta Empire ruled. The temple was constructed in 3-4 BC, in which he saw the deity as Narayana (Vishnu). The idol of Vishnu is believed to have vanished for centuries and around the 7th century, when Shaivism was the most popular religion, and Viniteshwara emerged as the presiding deity of the temple.
