Ooty, or Udhagamandalam, has a rich history dating back to its early discovery by British explorers in the early 19th century. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Todas, Kotas, and Badagas, Ooty was transformed from a tribal land into a summer retreat by the British, who were enchanted by its cool climate and scenic beauty. In 1820, the British East India Company established Ooty as a hill station to serve as a summer headquarters for the Madras Presidency. The construction of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a project started in the late 19th century and completed in 1908, played a significant role in making Ooty accessible to more people, further enhancing its popularity as a resort town. With its colonial architecture, botanical gardens, and historical sites, Ooty today reflects a blend of British colonial heritage and traditional Tamil culture, making it a place of historical and cultural significance. |
