About Salandi Dam : |
A project comprises a reservoir by construction of a dam called Salandi Dam across river Salandi, a tributary of Baitarani, near Hadagarh at Latitude 210-17’-18” N and longitude of 860-18’-00” E. Salandi dam is a composite dam with 640m length earth dam and 114.6m long masonry dam having spillway gates of 8 spans of 12.2m each. The height of the dam is 51.82m. The catchment area of the reservoir is 673 km2 and design flood discharge is 5140 m3/sec. The water spread area of the reservoir is 31.82 km2 at FRL (82.3m) with gross storage capacity of 601 Mm3. The project was started in 1960 and completed in 1983. A dam was built on Salandi River in Hadgarh. Shal, Piyashal, Sishu, Garran, Mahua, Kendu, Dhab and many more mangrove trees are creating natural shades on the banks of Salandi. Tigers, elephants, leopards, boars, deer, bison and deer are the common denizens of Salandi. You can hire a boat on the salandi River to watch the natural vista of the place closely. Tourists can stay at Salandi Niloy, located on the banks of Salandi River. Bungalow of forest authority can be another nice place where tourists can stay overnight.

Climate/Weather in Salandi Dam :Area is characterised by an equable temperature all through the year, particularly in the coastal regions and by high humidities. The cold season from December to February is followed by hot season from March to May. The period from June to September marks the South West Monsoon and 70% of annual precipitation is received during this period. The normal rain fall of this district is 1444 mms. May is the hottest month. With the arrival of the monsoon by about the second week of June the day temperature decreases slightly while the night temperature continue as it was in the summer. Towards the end of September, after the withdrawal of south west monsoon, temperature decreases progressively. December is the coldest month. The relative humidity are high throughout the year especially in coastal areas. Winds are fairly strong particularly in coastal regions in summer and monsoon months. |
