Jalaput Dam | Dams in Odisha

About Jalaput Dam:

The Jalaput Dam is a hydroelectric dam built on the Machkund River, a tributary of the Godavari River. The river originates from the Mudugal hills in the Visakhapatnam District, and near Ondra Gadda, it forms the natural boundary between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The Machkund River meanders through the Padwa Valley for over 48 km and is famous for the Duduma Falls, where it cascades down a steep descent.

The Jalaput Dam, along with its reservoir, has a storage capacity of 34.273 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water. This reservoir supports the 120 MW Machkund Hydro-Electric Scheme (MHES), a joint venture between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, which has been operational since 1955.

Over the years, the six power generation units of MHES have become outdated. Plans for modernization include installing a new hydroelectric scheme with a 15 km long tunnel that utilizes a significant 400-meter level drop between the Jalaput Reservoir and the Balimela Reservoir. Additionally, there is potential to establish a large-scale pumped-storage hydroelectricity station, which would use Jalaput as the upper pond and Balimela as the tail pond. This system would enhance energy generation by efficiently storing and utilizing water for peak demand periods.

Furthermore, surplus water from the nearby Upper Kolab Reservoir can be diverted to the Machkund River Basin through a 4 km tunnel, boosting electricity generation in both the MHES and the Balimela powerhouses. This would allow the use of additional water resources for enhanced power generation, irrigation, and more efficient water management in the Sileru River Basin.

  • History of Jalaput Dam:

The Jalaput Dam, located on the Machkund River, a tributary of the Godavari River, is a significant hydroelectric and irrigation infrastructure serving both the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The idea of constructing the dam emerged in the mid-20th century as part of the broader plans to harness the water resources of the Machkund River for power generation and irrigation.

Construction of Jalaput Dam began in the early 1950s and was completed in 1955 as part of the Machkund Hydro-Electric Scheme (MHES). The dam is strategically located, with its reservoir feeding into a power station that generates 120 MW of electricity. The project was a joint venture between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, aimed at providing energy and irrigation support to both states.

The dam was designed not only to generate hydroelectric power but also to store a large volume of water—about 34.273 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet)—to meet irrigation needs. The MHES marked a major milestone in the region’s development, as it provided a stable source of power for the growing industrial and agricultural sectors in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

Over time, the six power generation units became outdated, prompting plans for modernization. Proposals to install a pumped-storage hydroelectricity system have been suggested to enhance the dam’s productivity, making it an essential component of regional development and resource management in modern India.
