About Gohira Dam :

Gohira Irrigation Project is a reservoir project situated at Lat. 21°-28'-10" N and Long. 84°-34'-10" E near village Ambaghat in Deogarh district of Odisha. The Dam intercepts a fan-shaped catchment area of 236 km² in the Deogarh hill ranges across the Gohira River, a right bank tributary of the Brahmani River. It provides irrigation to an ayacut area of 8120 hectares during Kharif and 5700 hectares during Rabi.

The construction of the project started in 1977 and was fully completed by 1985. The dam is a homogenous rolled fill earth dam with a total length of 3550 meters and a maximum height of 28 meters above the deepest foundation level. An Ogee Crested 70-meter long spillway is provided on the left flank saddle, fitted with 5 radial gates of size 12m x 6m.

A roller bucket with a 10-meter radius is provided downstream of the spillway to dissipate the energy of the spilling water. A gallery of size 1.50m x 2.20m is provided in the spillway. Originally, the estimation of the design flood was done using Dicken's envelope method with C = 2200 in fps units, which came to 1840 m³/sec. The recomputed SPF is 3772 m³/sec.

The major dam safety problems include choked drainage and uplift pressure release holes, rock protrusions over the spill channel obstructing the flow, scouring downstream of the cutoff spillway bucket, and rain cuts and gullies formed on the downstream slope of the earth dam.
