  • History of Sambalpur City:

    Sambalpur is one an ancient place of India. The history of Sambalpur, depicted by eminent historians is full of incidents including the Indian freedom struggle, which represents different sections of the society. Sambalpur has been mentioned in Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus) book which is known to be on the left bank of the River Manada is also known as Mahanadi. Sambalpur came under Bhonsle of Nagpur when the Marathas captured Sambalpur in 1800. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817, the British Government return Sambalpur to the Chauhan King, Jayant Singh, but their rights were removed on other princely states. Veer Surendra Sai, who fought against British rule, played an important role in the history of India's struggle for independence. So Sambalpur was transferred to Cuttack division in 1858 and Oriya made an official language in Sambalpur. In 1896 Hindi was made official language in Sambalpur. 1956 Hirakud Dam was built the Mahanadi River.
