Konark is actually the integration of the two words, "Kona", which means "corner" and "Arka" which means sun. The earliest mention of Konark in the history of Konark is in the Puranans, when this place was referred to as Mundira or Mundirasvamin. This name was later replaced by Konaditya or Konarka. Konark is a busy port that shares mutually beneficial business relations with Southeast Asian countries. The construction of the very famous Sun Temple, which is still in Konark, is credited to King Narashimdev of Ganga Dynasty. The construction of this temple was a commemoration of his victory over the Muslims. Later the temple had to face neglect and was blamed by the Mughal emperor, Jahangir's ambassador. |
