About Konark City:

Konark is a small city in the Puri District in Odisha. The Konark city is situated in 65 Km from Bhubaneswar. The main attraction of the city is Sun Temple. The Konark temple is considered as the finest temple devoted to the Sun God. There are many other ancient temples here are located. The Konark Dance Festival which is the most famous festival in Konark. Three-day cultural festival, organized every year in the month of December, is visited by hundreds of tourist. Dance Festival represents some of the major Indian classical dance forms and folk dances.
The Konark temple, which shows a chariot with 24 huge wheels pulled by 7 horses, is believed to have been wandering on a drawn carriage taken on seven horses by the Sun God through heaven. This is definitely one of the glory of the crown of ancient architecture. Konark is a part of Orissa's Golden Triangle, which includes Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri.

  • History of Konark City:

    Konark is actually the integration of the two words, "Kona", which means "corner" and "Arka" which means sun. The earliest mention of Konark in the history of Konark is in the Puranans, when this place was referred to as Mundira or Mundirasvamin. This name was later replaced by Konaditya or Konarka. Konark is a busy port that shares mutually beneficial business relations with Southeast Asian countries. The construction of the very famous Sun Temple, which is still in Konark, is credited to King Narashimdev of Ganga Dynasty. The construction of this temple was a commemoration of his victory over the Muslims. Later the temple had to face neglect and was blamed by the Mughal emperor, Jahangir's ambassador.

    Sun Temple Konark: Konark Sun Temple, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, which is located in Konark city. This is 13th Century temple which is dedicated to Lord Sun. One of the best tourist attraction in Odisha. It was built in 1278 CE by a former Ganga king Narasimha Dev I. Sun Temple is the concept of the whole temple in the form of a chariot. The temple is made of Khondalite rocks, and is built in the traditional style of Kalinga architecture.

    Konark Beach: This famous beach attracts many tourists not only from India every year but from all over the world. It is located at 3 Km from Konark Sun temple. Clean sand, turquoise water, sun and cold air are typical for the Konark Beach. It is considered one of the finest beaches in Konark and is also popular all over the world. The natural surroundings of the beach are quite and wonderful view.

    Nine Planet Shrine: The Nine Planet Shrine temple is located outside of Sun temple. Taking the sitting figures of the sun and the remaining planets of the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu is the main part of this small temple. These nine planets are represented Navagrahas. Also Knows as Navagrahas Temple.

    Archaeological Site Museum: This museum is near located in Sun temple. It’s quite good museum, and also provides the information of Sun temple. The museum was established in 1968. There are many different things in the gallery, which are displayed in 4 different galleries. These galleries ancient objects include various sculptures, paintings, manuscripts and various falling parts from the Konark Sun Temple. It’s a wonderful Museum visit.

    Ramachandi Temple: The Ramachandi temple is located at the banks of Kusabhadra River which flows into the Bay of Bengal. A very old Devi temple. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Ramachandi. This temple is one the most famous temple in Konark. This temple surrounded a wonderful picnic place and is rich with a verity of bird species and pleasant views.
