About Balasore City:

Balasore is one of the coastal districts of Odisha. It is situated in northern most part of Odisha. Balasore was built as a separate district in October 1828, originally it was in Bengal presidency. This district is located in the Medinipur district of West Bengal, its eastern part, the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Bhadrak district in the southern and the Mayurbhanj and the central district on the west side of it. There are two sub-divisions like Balasore and Nilagiri in this district. Balasore is the main town of the district and is also its center of economics growth. The primary occupation of people in the district is farming. This district is mainly known for paddy cultivation.
Balasore district has four major revenue sources, agriculture, fisheries and tourism. In Balasore district, oil seeds like rice, pulses, peanuts, mustard, castor and linseed are grown. Before and after independence, education has played an important role here. Many fairs and festivals celebrate here year-round. The main festivals include Durga Puja, Shiva Ratri, Raja Fiesta, Makar Sankranti, Kali Puja etc. Here the beautiful beaches and many temples attract local and national tourists.
Chandipur, Talasari beach, the coastal beach, Kashifa beach, are the famous beaches of the district. The temples are the main attraction such as Panchingeshwar, Khirochora Gopinath, Langleswar, Lakshmannath, Chandneshwar, and Manigenjwar.

  • History of Balasore City:

    Balasore was built as a separate district in October 1828, originally it was in Bengal presidency. Baleshwar district was a part of ancient Kalinga kingdom which later became the area of Koshala or Utkal till the death of Mukund Dev. It was captured in 1568 by the Mughal Empire and remained a part of their allegiance to the 1700s. The British East India Company (EIC) established a factory in Balasore in 1633. Marathas captured this part of Odisha and it became part of the rule of Bhosle Maratha kings of Nagpur. With the creation of Bihar, Odisha was taken from Bengal to Bihar along with Balasore district.
    But on 1 April 1936, Balasore became an integral part of the state of Odisha, with the creation of Odisha as a separate state. In 1921 visit of Mahatma Gandhi the national movement of independence surged ahead. Nilagiri State merged with Odisha State in January 1948 and became part of Balasore district.
