About Sacred Heart Cathedral:

Sacred Heart Church is one of the oldest church in Orissa located at sector 19, Hamirpur, Rourkela which is a Roman catholic church and belongs to Roman Catholic Diocese of Rourkela. This is not that big in size but one of the beautiful church which gardens are surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees. Interior architecture of Sacred Heart Church is simple but one of the best you can find in any church in Orissa. This church is spread in the area of 3,736 sq mi. Bishop Kishore Kumar Kujur is the head of this church.

History Sacred Heart Cathedral:

This church was built by Society of Jesus priests. First they built church in Keshramal in the year 1908 and after that in the year 1918 Sacred Heart church was established. In the starting it was a part of Sambalpur Diocese but later in 1979 when Sambalpur diocese was separated than Rourkela Diocese formed and from than to till now its run by cathedral of Rourkela Diocese.

Flight – Rourkela has an air strip but that one is dedicated to Rourkela steel plant and for important dignitaries and VVIPs only. There is no flight service for general public. The nearest domestic airport is Ranchi airport which is around 226KM away and Biju Patnaik International airport Bhubaneswar is around 343 KM from here.

Bus – There are various bus services available from various districts of Orissa like Bhubaneswar, Balasore, and Cuttack etc. and apart from that various bus services also available from other states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkahnd, Westbengal.

Railways – Rourkela has very good railway connectivity there are three railway stations in this city Rourkela Junction (ROU), Panposh (PPO) & Bondamunda (BNDM).  These railway stations are well connected through main line from Howrah, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Ranchi, Pune, Dhanbad and from various other cities.

Hanuman Vatika (10KM) - Hanuman Vatika is situated at Basanti Nagar 10KM away from the Sacred heart church. This place is like a garden where you can see various shrines dedicated to various deities. The main attraction of this place is 22.8 m tall statue of Lord Hnauman worshipped by Hindu believers.

Vedvyas Temple (14KM) - This temple is 14 Km away from the Sacred heart church. This place is located on the banks where three rivers (Sankha, Koel and Saraswati) unite. It is said that Mahabharata was written here by sage vedvyas. This is the reason this place known by vedvyas temple. This temple has many temples around dedicated to different gods. The main temple here is Shiv temple which contains a shiv lingum which is said to be built of precious and expensive Blackstone.

Vaishnodevi Temple Rourkela (6KM) - Vaishnodevi Temple is situated at railway colony on top of Durgapur hill which is around 6KM away from the Sacred Heart Church. This temple is exact replica of Vaishnodevi temple which is situated at Jammu.

Rani Sati Mandir(Birmitrapur)(37KM) – This temple is situated at NH143, Birmitrapur which is around 37 Km away from the Church. This place is also known as second Jhun Jhun Dhan and spread in 2 acres land.  Very beautifully designed temple with white marbles and golden pot at the top gives it a palace look. Couples of flower gardens are there and along with Rani Sati temple there are temples of lord shiva, Sita Ram Temple, Ganesh Temple and Hanuman Temple.

Mandira Dam (23KM) – Mandira Dam is located at Kansbahal which is around 23 Km away from the Church. This dam is built across Sankh River, located 16 km upstream from Mandira. This dam is used for Rourkela steel plant.

Khandadhar Fall (86KM) – Khandadhar Falls is around 86 km from the church and 15 Km from NH215 near Lahunipara. This one is considered as the highest waterfall in the state Orissa and fourth highest in India. This place is surrounded by dense forest. When you see water falling from Steep Mountain flat on the surface it really looks very beautiful.

Darjeeng Picnic area (47KM) - This spot is located at NH143 located on the banks of Brahmani River. This place is one of the most popular picnic spot with soothing landscape.

Jubilee Park (4KM) – This park is situated at Sector - 8 which is 4Km away from the church. There is a Deer park which has 70 varieties of Deer. You can also view beautiful musical fountains and various kinds of playing arrangements for children’s.
