Swathi Sangeethotsavam is a 7-day music festival in the month of Dhanu, from 06 to 12 January every year at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India within the Fort Palace Complex adjoining the Sreepadmanabhaswami Temple. This festival is held in the majestic Kuthiramalika palace built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal himself. Exclusively, compositions of Maharaja Swathi Tirunal Rama Varma are rendered at the festival. This festival is of recent orgin, but the settings of the Kuthiramalika palace has made it one of the very special festivals, and is perhaps next only to Navarathri concerts, also held in the nearby mandapam complex.

Swathi festival is a gala event of music organised by the Government of Kerala every year in the last week of January.On the occasion of the Swathi Musical Festival in Kerala, a large number of eminent musical personalities from all over the country gather at the Kuthiramalika Palace in Thiruvananthapuram. It is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy the musical shows that are put up by them. You can derive pleasure by listening to their songs.

Concerts start at 6 pm (the concerts tend to last generally from 150 to 200 minutes, although no time limit is given to the artists). Concerts are open to all lovers of music and are organised by H.H.Sir Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore Trust. The entrance to Kuthiramalika is via Bhajanappura Palace, Thekketheruvu.

History:

The venue of this grand musical extravaganza is the Kuthiramalika Palace in Thiruvananthapuram.There is a reason behind choosing this palace as the location. The famous king of the erstwhile state of Travancore Swathi Thirunal was a celebrated poet and musician as well. He had composed many of his memorable verses in this palace itself. So there could not have been any better place to carry on the musical legacy of this gifted man.

Aaranmula Boat Race
The Aaranmula Boat Race is staged each year in the scenic village of Aaranmula in August/ September. This river carnival is part of the Aaranmula Temple festival.

Varkala Beach
Varkala is a sea side resort, as well as an important Hindu centre of pilgrimage. High cliffs with rich mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. The 2,000 year old Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Centre are the two main attractions here

Agastyakoodam
About 1869 meters above sea level, Agastyakoodam is the highest peak in the Western Ghats, next only to Anamudi. Tradition says that the great sage Agasthya, had his abode in this peak. This mountain is located in Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve in the eastern side of the district. The area is noted for its abundant ayurvedic herbs and ecotourism.

Veli lagoon
Veli lagoon The boat club attracts tourists by providing facilities for pedal boating , row boating , swimming on the placid waters of the veli lake.

Aruvikkara
Aruvikkara 16 km. It is both a pilgrim centre and a picnic spot. On the banks of the Karamana river, this spot houses a Bhagavathy temple with a water fall nearby. A Stream with fishes which come up to be fed by visitors is another attraction.

Vizhinjam
Vizhinjam About 2kms south of Kovalam, it is believed to be an ancient port. The Dutch and Portugese had commercial establishments here. It is being developed as a modern fishing harbour.

Sankumukham Beach
The long stretch of clean sand is located near the airport. The water here, however, is not suitable for bathing.

Sri. Ananthapadmanabhaswamy Temple
The ancient temple is the most dominating feature of Thiruvananthapuram. Overlooking the Padma Theertham Tank, the temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu who is depicted reclining on Sri Anantha, the hooded snake from which the city derives its name. Exquisite stone carvings and pavilions are worth admiring. The temple is open only to Hindus and dress regulations are strictly enforced.

Veli Tourist Village
A large recreational centre located near the airport along a sheltered lagoon offers landscaped gardens and watersports facilities. It is a popular picnic spot. Accommodation facilities are available in the youth hostel.

Public Park
Truly a representative of the clean and verdant aspect of the city, the Public Park houses many important institutions, like Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. The Zoo is open from 09.00 hrs. to 17.00 hrs. The observatory on the Observatory Hill is also located in the Public Park.

Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari, the land's end of India is only 87kms from Trivandrum. Also known as Cape Comorin, this beautiful spot is in the neighbouring Tamilnadu state.

Ponmudi
61 km. A beautiful hill station away from the city. The natural scenery, salubrious climate and the scope of hiking in high trails make the visit an exhilarating experience.

Varkala
Varkala is a pilgrim centre for the devotees of Sree Narayana Guru, one of the patron saints of Kerala, whose motto was "One God, One Religion, One Caste". It is only 51kms from Trivandrum by road and also boasts of one of the best beaches in the State.

Kovalam beach is only 16 km away from the city. This unique wonderful beach will get pride of place amongst the loveliest beaches in the world. It is a sheltered bay and is endowed with unusual natural beauty.
